5.6 Management review

5.6.1 General

Top management shall review the organization's quality management system, at planned intervals, to

ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy and effectiveness. This review shall include assessing

opportunities for improvement and the need for changes to the quality management system, including the
quality policy and quality objectives.

Records from management reviews shall be maintained (see 4.2.4).

5.6.2 Review input

The input to management review shall include information on


a) results of audits,

b) customer feedback,

c) process performance and product conformity,

d) status of preventive and corrective actions,

e) follow-up actions from previous management reviews,

f) changes that could affect the quality management system, and
g) recommendations for improvement.

5.6.3 Review output

The output from the management review shall include any decisions and actions related to

a) improvement of the effectiveness of the quality management system and its processes,

b) improvement of product related to customer requirements, and


c) resource needs.
Pl. note there are actually twelve shall requirements here although the word shall appers only five times.

Under 5.1 d) it states conducting management reviews

and

Under 5.6.1 Top management shall review the organizations QMS at planned intervals....................records of these reviews shall be maintained.

I've been audited for 10 years now and the first thing my auditor wants to review are my Management Review Meeting records.

Dear Friend,

What i would suggest is that you can carry out your Management Review at planned intervals as per Clause 5.6.1 of the ISO 9001 standard and you should cover all the agenda items during the year

I asked the Auditor to show me where in the standard it was stated that we must have one meeting that reviews all inputs for Management Review in one meeting. He backed off a bit and mumbled something about how it was the philosophy of the Registrar he is employed by to require clients to have one meeting that reviews all at the same time.

Your organization is to be congratulated. An effective continual improvement process is one that is reviewed on a regular and frequent interval. It is one that is adjusted as what you find requires (i.e. process with numerous non-conformances might be scheduled to be auditing more frequently).

Since I can’t read minds, I do not know what your auditor was thinking. This is MY opinion only. Next time your read The Standard, look at how much you find effective/effectiveness. Whether internal audits or management review, I believe I could make a good case that anything more than annual is ineffective. Again, my opinion, not requirement.

Of course, I do not mind if all items are not covered every time there is a review; however, I would expect to see all items covered over the years period. Oh, but that would take work on the auditor's part.....

Not something that any good auditor will mind at all. Quite the reverse in fact - they'll be delighted to see an organisation aware of the miportance of this activity and doing it well.

We saw the management review activities as essential to management of our business, and not as a separate activity needed just to pass an audit.

Precisely. Which is the reason that it's in the Standard in my opinion, just because it is so essential to management. But even a Standard can't force people to grasp this basic but important point, although it can and has set some minimum requirements.

Consider how this topic is addressed in the (only just released) ISO 9004 Managing for Sustained Success. Not one single word about an 'annual' review. Quite the contrary, there's an emphasis on the need to review regularly and frequently: for example (8.1, Monitoring Measurement, Analysis and Review):

To achieve sustained success in an ever-changing and uncertain environment, it is necessary for the organization to regularly monitor, measure, analyse and review its performance
