Manual Vision CMM Calibration

#1
I'm new to the metrology field, I've only been in a few months, so please understand if some of the things I mention don't make since.

I work for a company the makes and sells manual, vision CMMs So non-CNC, non-contact CMMs. We don't exactly have an in-house calibration procedure that we use before shipping the machines to the customers, just whatever one guy was taught years ago. Basically I'm not sure if what he does is correct, good, etc.

The measure software we have is Metlogix M3, in which we perform Circle, Stage, and FOV Calibration before shipping the machines.

Does this "procedure" seem accurate or enough to say that the machine is working properly?

What do you mean by "perform Circle, Stage, and FOV Calibration "?
Do these verify the full functioning of your machines?
What are the actual parameters being measured?
How do they relate to the accuracy claimed for the CMM?
What standards are used in your calibrations?
Are they calibrated and traceable to NIST?
Do you have a documented procedure, so that the same procedure is performed every time, no matter who is performing this?
What kind of results do you present to your customers?

We have no documented procedure, that's why I'm here to see what insight can be given.

A circle cal is used for pixel calibration, where you input the artifact diameter and lineup a crosshair on the circle. Stage cal can be done with NLEC or SLEC, we use SLEC. Here we setup a glass standard a measure lengths over the whole length of travel for the stage for both X & Y. FOV cal setup a glass standard with 0.5 mm circles which is used to input the number of the circles along the X & Y.

I'm not sure if these verify the full functioning or what the actual parameters being measured are. I'm trying to verify/figure out how the accuracy claimed was determined, no one seems to have information on that. The accuracy I've seen shows a formula, which I believe is from ISO 10360.

For standards, we use a Max Levy glass linear ruler and a Max Levy glass with lots of dots on it. I believe both are calibrated, I think both are traceable to NIST.

For results, I believe we only present the stage calibration results.

I feel sorry for you here.

If you don't know the tolerances claimed for your CMM's accuracy then how can you declare them calibrated?
The Max Levy standards are good, but they are worthless without calibration documents to show traceability to NIST.
As to whether or not your "calibration" is adequate, that will depend on what you claim are its guaranteed measurement specifications.
And yes, you must document your procedure, once you figure out what it is.

Doing further looking around, the accuracy formula is shown as 3+L/200 at 20 C and a repeatability of +/- 1 um.

The Max Levy standards, have documents showing that both were calibrated 3 years ago, in July 2015 and Nov 2015.

Hope this helps.

Does this thing use micrometer heads for the stage positioners, or is there some digital display?
What is the motion range for each axis?

#7
It has either Heidenhain or Renishaw linear encoders, with 1 um resolution. There is a digital display within the software for X and Y position of the stage.

Motion range depends on the model, smallest being about 100 mm in both X & Y and largest being about 350 in X and 250 in Y.

OK, so now we have the specifications of your CMM, and it will be somewhere from 4 to 6 µm depending on travel.
You have your glass scales. They need to be calibrated (traceable to NIST), and they need to have better accuracy than the CMM. 4X better is desired, but you may have to settle for less.
Then you will need to generate a procedure on how you actually test the linearity, set your test points, and have pass/fail values.

Your circle and FOV sound like they are operation verification checks, something that you would expect your customer to perform prior to using the CMM. You should document these, but they probably would not be considered a pass/fail test, just a setup operation.

I hope this makes sense, and this should get you started.
