manufacturers, distributors, and QMS development

Hello all!!:
I did a search for this and couldn't find an answer for this.

A question about supplier control vs. manufacturer control.

I work for a design responsible company that buys some components from distributors, (who distribute the same standard part made by several manufacturers)

We are converting to a new engineering / purchasing control software system. In this system, the design engineer will tell purchasing: “Part 1234 must be manufactured by company XYZ, and only XYZ. I don’t care who the distributor is.”

Would we be responsible for supplier development under 7.4.1.2 for the manufacturer of these standard parts, even though we only deal with the distributor?

Any help would be appreciated.

"Would we be responsible for supplier development under 7.4.1.2 for the manufacturer of these standard parts, even though we only deal with the distributor?"

IATF guidance states:
"The burden is on the organization to demonstrate compliance of its suppliers to this requirement . . . . ." "Supplier" in this clause (7.4.1.2) refers to sites where production and/or service parts specified by the customer are manufactured. See also the definition of "manufacturing" 3.1.6"

In answer to your question,IMO, we are responsible for the requirements of 7.4.1.2 beyond the distributor. If not we could all buy from a distributor and skip the entire clause.
Of course that could be a way of reducing our supplier development costs.
I think maybe you may need an opinion from The IATF on this one.

Thanks Sam. What you say makes sense.

I guess we'd better assume that we are responsible. By the time the IATF answers the question, TS will be replaced by something else!! :frust:
