Hello everyone.

Durring a recent aoutdit i have been qriten up by an auditor for not calibrated preasure gages on our manufacturing equipment. My question is do the have to be calibrated?

Thank You.

Re: Preasure Gages Calibration

Are the pressure gauges instrumental to your product? What type of manufacturing equipment are they on?

Does the equipment only produce acceptable results between a certain pressure range? If so, then the pressure gauge reading will need to be verified.

Re: Preasure Gages Calibration

What does report your internal procedure related to calibration?
Are these pressure gages necessary to assure valid results?
What are the requirements of the monitoring and measurement process to assure the conformity versus them?
Do you have a Control plan?
pls, tell us and explain more in detail about non conformity.

Re: Pressure Gages Calibration

If you have procedures documenting the pressure settings required as a result of performing process validation, or you record the pressures during production and utilise the data then yes, you do need to ensure that they are calibrated.

Quote from the Report

"Pressure gages on forming machines are not calibrated or identified as not requiring calibration"

Well gages in question are part of a bending machine. The reading is taken form the gage by the operator as reference only. Is there a standart that would call out thta the gages need to be calibrated. And if yes taking apart the machine each time the gage needs to be calibrated would be insane.

Many of us have run into this before.
You can go bananas labeling "for reference only" and it's unwarranted.
There was even a Dilbert or two about this.

I would consider putting a line in my calibration procedure that says "all gauges without calibration labels are not calibrated and are for reference only"
And then make sure they do not appear in my calibrated equipment list/database.

What standard are you being audited to?
And more importantly is there anything in your current procedures that requires all gauges to be labeled and that's what the auditor is writing the finding against?

Then all that leaves you to do is mark all the pressure gauges up as "FOR INDICATION ONLY".

Re: Pressure Gages Calibration

OK - Here is the scoop - If something such as pressure is critical to a process the gage that measures it has to be calibrated. For example, in injection molding typically pressure, temperature and hold time are typically critical to the process. Because they are considered critical to the process, gages that measure these have to be calibrated. One way to know what critical parameters are (or should be) on the Control Plan.

In the above example, I would not think pressure would be a critical parameter in the bending process. But, I'm not experienced enough in bending metal to know for sure. Others may be able to add their :2cents: about pressure as a critical parameter in the bending process.

How do you bend metal? You apply pressure...I'd say they would need to be calibrated.

Re: Pressure Gages Calibration

You could very well be correct, but I wouldn't think so unless the rate of bending is a critical characteristic of the process. But as I say, I'm not knowledgable in bending of different metal alloys, not to mention differences such as tubes vs. solid metal.

Like I say, to me whether an aspect of a process is *critical* should be determined during the design of the process, and if it is critical it should be on the control plan. I would depend upon the designer(s) of the process to determine what is critical and what is not.
