Manufacturing Instructions and Forms for our Products - Question on Content

Hi, I am trying to prepare Manufacturing Instructions and forms for our products. The forms are basically a check list for the operator and QC to mark pass/fail for setup and in process parameters. Is it possible or advisable to make the forms per product, meaning each product will have the same forms but with different tolerances? or must it be a generic form that will suit all products? the problem is that my boss wants to have the tolerances on the form itself, and not have the operator referring to a different place for the tolerances. I hope I'm clear enough, what do you think?

Could you elaborate a bit about the number of items? There's a difference between producing 10 or a 1000 items, and consequently how to handle the documentation need.

Re: A question about forms

by number of items you mean products? if so, we have many, a lot of them are the same, some of them are different. I suggested putting the set up tolerances in the manufacturing procedures which are per product and the operator will refer to the MP and then check off the forms. but as I said, my boss is strongly against it, he doesn't believe that the operator should have all these papers running around. He wants the operator to have the tolerances in the form itself.

Re: A question about forms

If you have got a lot of different items I would suggest that you keep the documents generic. Try to creat a few master documents that contain specifications per item group. It will be a lot easier for all parts to relate to. If you have product specific documents then the administration of the documents is a lot more difficult, and the chances of operators actually using the forms are diminished.

I tend to agree with the boss here. Although this is a lot of extra work - but look at your end user. If they have to refer to another document for tolerancing, the chance of error is increased. I don't know what the other documents are - maybe a drawing? What if the operator doesn't know how to read drawings? Or dosen't understand tolerance blocks.

:2cents: It is easier to train an operator to use a few documents than a lot. "If i produce screws i use this form, if I produce bolts I use that form". Keep it simple.
Operator competence is not the issue, that point is related to training of employees. If the don't understand these things they should receive adequate training.

Thank you guys for your inputs. Let's say I will use a form per product. As far as the document control, what do you think is the best way to do it? Should it be as an appendix to the MP, meaning it will be counted as one of the pages of MP? Or should it be a separate form with a separate number?

Using a generic form, have the set-up people note the CTQ tolerances, how often these need to be checked and how they are checked. All this information can be taken right off the control plan for the product.

Just to add my two cents, we make hundreds of products, some we maintain in inventory, some are made-to-order (like a chemical short-order cook).

Anyway, we have a general manufacturing SOP that outlines the process of making a batch, but we leave specific instructions for each product to the individual manufacturing instructions (we call it a Batch Production Record (BPR)). Our products are dissimilar enough to warrent separate documents.

Is MP manufacturing procedure? In our case, the general manufacturing SOP spells out that there will be a BPR for each product and what should be on each one (safety instructions, equipment list, step-by-step instructions), but each document is not a part of the SOP. They're kept by our internal product number and revision number.
