Material and the Performance Results in the PPAP 4 - What is the difference?

Dear All,

we need to fullfill the new PPAP documents for our costumer. How should we divide between the Material and the Performance results ?
Each Material has each own "specification" and all of them will be checked in the product qualification - that means as a result in the Performance Test Result.

This was a confusing element that I stumbled on when I first started APQP work! However this is how we see it now:

Your Material Results, verfies the physical properties of the materials contained within your product. Many OEMs will specify that a material must meet a particular spec at a minimum and you should be able to verify that it does.

Performance Results verifies the performance and function of your product, components and materials when exposed to the conditions that they will be used in. It could simply be that it meets with the customer performance requirements, but it is more common to include validation in the operating environment as part of this assessment.

The official lines in the AIAG PPAP manual is as follows:

Material Results: The supplier shall perform tests for all parts and product materials when chemical, physical, or metallurgical requirements are specified by the design record or control plan.
Performance Test Results: The supplier shall perform tests for all parts or product materials when performance or functional requirements are specified by the design record.

What about the material report, if the costumer drawing only defines general req. for the whole module (e.g. salt spray), but our single parts also need to fullfill the req. acc. to the salt spray. The only difference the single part req. are defined in the internal drawing. Do we need then to list based on the example also the spec. for single parts ?

Thank you in advance

I am not entirely straight on what you are asking? However, I would carry out and list all testing requirements that you have been asked to conduct by your customer. If they have asked you to verify the Salt spray capability of your part, then this will need to be detailed as part of the performance results. As it is part of the performance of your part under an environmental condition. This maybe listed along with your component (single part) drawing requirements as long as reference to the particular design record is made in the results.

I would not worry too much about where the information is put, as long as it is clear where the requirements have been derived from and that all the requirements have been covered in the PPAP.

Hope this helps.

Are you supplying a module or a part.
What is the PPAP for?
If it is for the part then according to the requirements for the part.
If for the module then for the module.
The PPAP should be for the part number on the order.

Re: What is the difference between the Material and the Performance Results in the PP

We are supplying a module: bracket with some metal parts.
The drawing of our costumer req. the salt spray for the module ("to be tested in the assemled"...etc.). But our internal single part drawing states also the req. for the single part, to be testet in the whole module.
The only problem we have here, where should we put, for example this king of req.: in the material or performance report ?

I am sure, the OEM will not make any problem, when we just put this under the performance, but it is just for better understanding.

Greetings from sunny Poland and thanks in advance

In general, salt spray is considered a performance test. It's usually a coating (plating, paint, etc.) that's being tested for corrosion resistance, and the question is: How well does the coating perform under certain controlled conditions? On the other hand, the component (the piece-part) being tested has material specifications that tell what it's to be made from, such as a specific type of metal, ususally with reference to a published standard. The distinction is really pretty simple; in general material tests are for raw materials, and performance tests are for parts or assemblies that have been manufactured (but not necessarily in end-use condition), where there are specific requirements for proving that design intent has been satisfied.

Keep in mind that you're not bound to the forms in the PPAP manual. You can use any form you want; the manual itself gives the minimum requirements for content of both kinds of test reports.
