Measurement Equipment - Identification of Calibration Status

I based my observations not just on where I am working now, but other organizations where I have worked or audited.

It is very common that somewhere a policy exists that says that the operator will verify the calibration status of a tool prior to use. This is an easy way to deal the question "How do you know that this uncalibrated tool wasn't used in a process?"

From what my auditor training/trainer told me, it's not correct to audit from what is "common" or phrase questions on what's been seen at other companies. It creates a bias. If an internal auditor has studdied such documented requirements, that would be find, but to start out just asking any operator what the OP stated, and then look to justify it from a clause in the standards is incorrect, from what I've been trained to do.

OK, So I have been searching he for almost an hour and have found no evidence to meet my quandary, so I guess this is a good a place as any to ask this question. We all know we must Calibrate to the National Standard. SO, for IATF, what is the U.S. National Standard gauges should be calibrated to? 17025? ANSI?

What is everyone using?

IATF 16949 7.1.5.3.1 states what your calibration lab requirements are. Among these you need to be able to demonstrate "capability to perform these services correctly, traceable to the relevant process standard (such as ASTM, EN, etc.)"

How do you prove these requirements? "NOTE Third-party accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 (or equivalent) may be used to demonstrate the organization's in-house laboratory conformity to this requirement". So 17025 accreditation is a way to comply. Otherwise you will have to demonstrate compliance on your own.

So you do not have to be 17025 accredited, but if you aren't you will basically have to show that you are 17025 compliant to meet these requirements. What your auditors will require for proof will depend on your auditor. And you will be called upon to demonstrate this with every audit. That's where accreditation can pay off.

So, to realign the topic. What Standards Body is everyone quoting as the Standard they are using?

ANSI?
NSF?
Some EU body?

I would like to conform to a common "National Standard" that the Automotive Industry is Using, so I can buy or download their manual as evidence of the standard, the self training, and accreditation backing that information.
