Measuring equipment on injection machine should be calibrated by 3rd party?
This was a findings during customer audit, he requested us to calibrate those measuring equipments which in the injection
machine. Any experience on this case please reply, customer insist this action.

if it does , Calibrate cost will be more

Is your customer asking for 3rd party calibration of your injection molding process monitoring gages because you do not have an in-house laboratory capable of calibrating them?

if you have capability inside your lab to do this task then this can be sufficient once you convince your customer about the competency of your staff.

we don't have the capacity cal by our internal lab,

if it is the must, we need to review the machine down time and calibration cost

those meters like pressure meter, temp meter on the injection machine

What is the reason needed for calibrations? Those values, pressure and temp. are relative values, not actual values. In other words, they are not necessarily interchangable between machines. So whether the value is 500 or 600 is meaningless, as long as it is the same on the particular machine. If your process really requires superior control, then you should be looking at cavity pressures and melt temps -- ie; mold sensors as opposed to machine readings. If you are stuck with machine gage calibration, you may want to contact your machine manufacturer. Good luck.

Hello there!

Were there any critical parameters on the injection molding machine they noted specifically?

If the nozzle temperature is off, aren't you going to catch that in final acceptance of the product? Do you inspect all your products once complete?

What I'm asking is this: I realize they are your customer, but performing a full calibration on an injection molding machine (including process pressure gauges) can be very expensive.

If you can narrow down what are the critical parameters on the machine, maybe you can reduce the scope of calibration.

If you can demonstrate through final testing of the finished product that calibration is not needed, all the better. :)

Hello,

I agree with the gentlemen above that acceptability and in-lot / lot-to-lot stability of the final moulded parts are more important than an actual specific parameter reading. If you could implement some sort of SPC to show that your final product is acceptable and your process is stable, maybe you could convince that customer that looking at the machine parameters is not that interesting for them.

However, the customer has the right to behave like one...

To me it sounds as if they have less than perfect understanding of injection moulding QA, so I doubt that rational reasoning would help. Good luck anyway!

Cheers,
Ronen.

You need to calibrate "when necessary to ensure valid results". If you can obtain valid results without calibration, then calibration isn't needed. It still may be desirable though.

If the temperature and pressure monitoring equipment does not need calibration, why not simply remover the items from the machine? If it is not providing an quantitative data used for the product, there will be no negative effect in simply removing it.

If there is an effect and you need to know, then calibrate them, use an accredited lab, and get the uncertainty so you know what it is actually doing.

Is it an "all or nothing" situation?

In my opinion, like almost everything associated with profitability, it's a matter of risk management, i.e. weighing the benefits & costs vs. the risks in the default situation.

A control system may be of use even if it's not formally calibrated. It may still control the machine, and if indirect evidence (e.g. part characteristics) is indicating it's working properly, it may suffice in certain situations. If getting a formal calibration costs a lot more than implementing SPC, and there's no official mandatory requirement to calibrate, then why wouldn't choosing the latter be a legitimate decision?
