Measuring the Profile of a Surface

Why would the bore need to be involved. Datum -B- is the minor diameter of the spline. This establishes a datum axis.
The bore was an assumption on my part; more to be used as an example. However, the datum feature symbol -B- is not visible on the drawing that was attached... ;)

The center of the slot between the two larger tabs is the tertiary positioning reference. If the radius was manufactured in the wrong place, more than one of the dimensions relating to it would be out of tolerance. I'm still not sure the print doesn't contain enough information.
So I was not too far off track with my assumption of the tertiary datum feature... Again, the attached drawing did not show that either.

With the datums identified, and the basic dimensions provided, you should be able to produce the profile at the correct size and its correct location.

P.S.: Why did your drawing not show the datum feature symbols for the secondary and tertiary datums?

Best!

I suppose I could have used the entire drawing in my attachment. I didn't because the point was to highlight what I believed to be the proper positional characteristics (unfortunately it was not a "stand alone" document). The OP's attachment has the full drawing in which you can see Datums -A- & -B-.
Although the print does not designate the center of slot with a datum status, I was thinking this is what must be used as a tertiary datum. Take a look and see if you agree.

Hi,

for those not yet up to speed (still learning studying for the exam) ; a full drawing or another drawing shot would sure help out.....

Thanks,
Marty :thanks:

Yes, I agree! A complete drawing is always helpful, but may not always be posted/attached because of confidentiality reasons. :nope:

Hi Stijloor,

Boy oh boy I can't wait for 2009!!! In this case I am assuming this "clocking" jargon is used to address a Datum or other related positions along the perimeter or circumference of what appears to be a shaft/spline combo. From Hodgepodges entry, "The center of the slot between the two larger tabs is the tertiary positioning reference."

Are the subject tabs at approx. 10-11 or 2-3 o'clock?? Thanks for your help.....

Regards,
Studying on a holiday weekend for my exam - Marty
