Hi, I am new on this forum, i need advice from people who experienced ISO certification process. My mechanical shop has an offer to get account from big company for mechanical repairs but is required to get ISO certification. This is new for me and do not know where to start. I searched online and found a company that asked 80000$ fees for the process and said it takes 7 months. Please advice. What is ISO process? Is it realistic to get certified? How long does it take? What do I do to get it? I searched online but did not find much.I am located in USA.Thank you.

Re: need help!My mechanical autorepair shop requires ISO certification

$80,000? In Arkansas we call that theft by deception.

To be honest you'll need to spend some money of course, but $80K, most likely not and promising 7 months? I smell danger...Can it be done in 7, yeah, sure, but how good would it be? There are companies right now that will "certify" you tomorrow for $1500 or less and the certs would be as valuable as nose wipe

1st ...Do you have a copy of ISO 9001 yet? If not then that is where you start

2nd...Almost everything you need is here on this site and it costs....NADA! Zero, Zilch, NOTHING

Don't sell yourself short because you're a mechanic, so am I (aircraft and vehicle), you may already have 50% or more of what you need to meet ISO 9001 requirments.

Also you really don't need a whole lot of fancy training and don't let anyone talk you into a LEAD AUDITOR course....Waste of time for most people and you're talking a couple thousand $'s counting travel, hotels and that stuff

Everyone here will be glad to help you save that $80K if you just ask

This is the first I've seen of an auto repair shop being asked to have ISO 9001... you may be at the very head of trend.

I'm very curious as to what type of customer would ask for this... in general terms... like a major bus company? US postal service or UPS for their fleet? A large auto dealership?

Usually only companies that are registered themselves ask for their suppliers to be registered.

Hey - Maybe I'll ask my trusted auto mechanic if he'll do free labor on my cars in exchange for my setting up a quality management system for him! :D

Did it back in the '90s as a government contractor Scott (we repaired M1 Tanks and other stuff, but hey, automotive is automotive)

Various CBs had ISO 9001 schemes for garages which were very active in the UK in the '90s but I think the market fizzled out. The main demand was from vehicle manufacturers who imposed it on their franchised dealers.
BSI still has, I believe, a kitemark scheme for garages (PAS 80?) but I don't think the take up has been high.

yes, that was required by postal service.
My mechanic works on the little USPS delivery trucks every day. Coincidentally I was just there yesterday having my brakes done. I think I'll ask him next time I'm there for an oil change.

That being said, have our answers and links been helpful?

It really shouldn't be that complex since you should be able to exclude 7.3 "design and development" and I would see you as a service organization, not a manufacturer.
