Metal Stamping Process Audit Questions

Hello,

Next week I'm going to my supplier of metal stamping parts. I would like to prepare my self before an audit because I have a lot of problems with it.

Do you have any specific questions regarding metal stamping process (process parameters, steps, measurements, controls, maintenance, tools etc.) I was thinking about CQI from AIAG but as far as I know AIAG doesn't have anything about metal stamping

Thank you in advance for your help.

So, you're going to attempt an audit of a process you're unfamiliar with? Can you take someone who knows stamping with you?

When you go to a stamping house, - have you identified the issues that you need to deal with. If not you should.

Are they aware of them or is it a shock visit.:nope::nope::nope:

Note: if you are a newbie to the stamp industries, , the sharks will come out... and if you are nice and able to share your concerns in a professional matter then, they will embrace you.

However, Not sure what you want our help with but share the issues with yus and you suppliers.

Hello,

Honestly speaking I have been few times in this kind of supplier but I looking for some specific questions, parameters, information etc.. I'm building my question data base.

We have a lot of problem with geometry , curvature and length. Until now I have got couple claims from my customer about that, therefore it need to be solved. They are informed about the audit. I guess that they have a problem with a tool moreover I guess that something can be wrong with process parameters. I was looking for some specific questions regarding stamping without success

Thank you in advance for your help.

I would start with the First Piece Article Inspection Report. If one was required or requested. This would identified that at one time, they were able to produce a sample and that they had an effective process.

The best one that you could do is to bring a bad sample and a good sample and have them explain to you the process.

I could let you know that they will blame the tooling and that it need maintenance and that if it is your tooling, they would expect you guys to fix the tooling or give them a PO to fix it.
Note expect a request in the 5 to 6 figures in USA currency)

When you say you're doing an audit, what does that mean? Are you going in reaction to specific problems, or is this some type of routine QMS audit?
If it's a troubleshooting trip, what are the problems? Why does your company think that an audit will be useful? Tell us more about why you're going and what you're expected to accomplish.

Speaking as a stamper, if you are going to review a specific issue bring a copy of the print, along with good & bad samples. There are many issues that could cause the problems you are encountering. Some of them could include design issues - either with the part, tool or process - some tolerances may be difficult to meet and concessions were given to the supplier; material issues from a supplier; tooling changes; misunderstanding on the part of the designer/stamper/personnel; and/or miscommunication between the customer internally, customer/stamper.

When we have had issues in the past and our customers have come in, we always start with the print and part samples. We discuss what the issues are and share knowledge with each other - you know, not like adversaries, but like actual adults who are committed to resolving the issue. Sometimes, the issues stem from internal communications (concessions were given by the customer without understanding their own processes); material issues caused by a customer directed supplier; tool design/maintenance issues (sorry dsanabria, not always at the customer's expense!). If a change to the tool is requested by the customer to improve the parts, that cost is reviewed with the team.

Biggest advice I can offer - don't go in with an adversarial attitude. Bring data, samples, prints to help define the issues. Listen, ask questions, ask them to walk you through their process, see what they are checking on the first articles, review their PPAP's. If you are truly trying to resolve an actual issue you are experiencing (not nitpicking things for very small improvements), going in with this type of open mind attitude will get you more information and greater cooperation over the long run. :2cents:

I agree with Emmyd. I am a stamper as well and we found the same thing about bringing samples of good and bad. Another item you may want to bring if you can is what the assembly or what the stamped part goes with. Our engineers have found that this has been able to resolve the issue once they have seen what the part does.
