What procedure do you follow for disposal of Microbiological lab. i.e.
Material tested: Potable water
Types of test/ properties measured: Total colony counts, total coli forms, faecal Coli form/ e coli, faecal Streptococci/ enterococci.

well, we have a procedure as follows:

Used culture Medias:Disposable plastic petri dishes are packed in autoclavable plastic bags and sterilized. These sterilized bags are transferred to micro waste container which is disposed off either by incinerating them or via municipal trash.

Culture medias in glass petri dishes is sterilized by autoclaving and then repacked in the autoclavable bags. These bags are again sterilised by autoclaving and then transferred to micro waste container which is disposed off either by incinerating them or via municipal trash.

Solid Microbiology lab waste:• Contaminated broken glass ware is packed in autoclavable plastic bags and sterilized. These bags are transferred to waste container which is disposed off either by incinerating them or via municipal trash.

Non contaminated glass ware is transferred to broken glass container which is disposed off via municipal trash.

Can you not wash/clean these items (e.g. in laboratory glass washer) and sterilise them for reuse or recycling?

It seems a little wasteful and not very environmentally friendly disposing in 'municipal trash', presumably going to landfill.
