Micrometer Parallelism and Flatness Calibration Requirements and Specs

I'm going to re read the following document (ASME B89.1.13-2001 Micrometers) but my question is...

Is there a requirement that the Flatness and Parallelism needs to be verified during a calibration event?

If so is there an Industry Standard that states this?

Is there a document that lists a general tolerance for Flatness and Parallelism or is this still going to mfg. specific?

Thanks

Re: Micrometer Parallelism and Flatness Requirements

It could take me awhile to find if there is actually a clear requirement (I doubt it, except for specific industries like nuclear and military which have standards for about everything) but there are plenty of good practice documents out there, such as

Long Island Indicator Service (scroll to about the center)
Calpro (claims to have specs for DoD and Navy)

Well that's a start anyway! Supper calls now, I must go.

Re: Micrometer Parallelism and Flatness Calibration Requirements

If the instrument is expected to produce a consistent reading at any point along the 'jaws', there must be parallelism and flatness - no other ways isn't?

Re: Micrometer Parallelism and Flatness Calibration Requirements

I agree that if your using the instrument for quality data then we should be verifying all aspects of the instrument to our capabilities.

I like the CalPro information. I'm not sure where they found that tolerance chart that is listed for the DOD. Either way I need to find it because it matches what we have listed on our specification source doc. But I need to be sure that what is listed in CalPro is correct :)

The ASME does state a tolerance for Flatness and Parallelism, the flatness tolerance matches the Navy specs. It also specifies that you should check both anvil and spindle for flatness. The total of those values should not be greater than the parallelism tolerance.

If anyone has a link to the DOD specs that are listed in that CalPro doc please feel free to provide a link. I will keep looking for it also and provide a link if one is provided.

Any luck with DOD specs for micrometers? I can't find anything, I spent all day yesterday on Google with no results.

Well, I must have got lucky because I think I stumbled onto something that might help.

First was a sort of directory of standards listed by NDT-ed.org. While recently searching for MIL-standards about my Navy work experience I can vouch for what the site said: the Department of Defense is moving away from owning (and the maintenance of) all those standards. They aren't going away, but if you want the Navy standard on welding instead of looking for MIL-STD-278f the standard can be found as NAVSEA TECH PUB S9074-AR-GIB-010/278.

From there I found my way into a site called Department of Defense Single Stock Point and then its "assistdocs" portal. I typed the key word "micrometer" into and was returned with this list. Why don't you have a look? But notice the only ones not inactive or canceled are ASTM and SAE - tends to support what the previous paragraph and its link described. The (now canceled) GGG-C-105C is still viewable.

What a labyrinth! But it was worth it. :D

If you seek military approaches, I suggest GIDEP (Government-Industry Data Exchange Program). It has copies of the military calibration procedures, including NA 17-20 series and USAF T.O. 33K series. Not the newest versions, but recent enough. I think the website is www.gidep.org but you may just google gidep.

Thank you for helping out! These were all the sites I found also but I'm going to look over the list again in case I missed something.

I'm still waiting for our tech to provide me the login and password for our company. I've asked him 3 times now. :(
