Friends,

From msnbc.com:

Beta test version will be available Friday for regular PC users to download.

LAS VEGAS - Microsoft Corp.'s next version of the Windows operating system is almost ready for prime time.

That's one message Chief Executive Steve Ballmer delivered on the eve of the official opening of the International Consumer Electronics Show.

The world's largest software maker also disclosed deals to make its Live Search programs the default search engines on more personal computers and mobile phones. And it announced a new version of its Ford Sync in-car technology that folds in the voice-operated directory service TellMe, which Microsoft bought in 2007.

Aha... Ok, I'm still happy wth XP, but sooner or later I will have to use something else. When that happens I would prefer it to be an upgrade rather than just a replacement which is how I see Vista. Maybe this critter will provide some new perks making it worthwhile?

Time will tell, and I hope they get many beta testers, but I will not be one of them. Somebody else can be the Guinea Pig: I don't have the time.

I'm with Claes. I used Windows 98 until XP came out, I still have a computer that runs on it. If history is any kind of example, it will be some time before I leave XP for the NEXT Windows system.

That's the dilemma MS is faced with--there are lots of happy XP users and Vista was a bust on the same level as Windows ME. I have no good reason to leave XP, and I doubt that Windows 7 (which is just Vista with some of the bugs worked out) will provide one.

I, and a few of my fellow nerds, have used various Windows 7 builds that have been released on the internet (from various Microsoft testers, not Microsoft itself) - and to be honest, although I have never been a fan of Mmicrosofts business practices, I have to say this time they may have got it right!

It uses far less resources than Vista without sacrificing the pretty things. The interface seems more intuitive and still accessible for the 'power users'.

Overall - very impressed - I was planning to switch to Linux when my current rig (running XP) needed replacing mainly due to the fact Vista was about as useful as an inflatable dartboard, but I may think again.

I used Windows 2000 until I had to replace 2 PCs that died in 2008. Both came with Vista but I put XP on both. I dont plan on changing until I have to buy a new PC (which will be a while). Heck, I still use Office 2000. There hasn't been anything added to Office that I need so I have no reason to pay for a new version.

I'm the same way with my Macs. I only go to newer OS X versions when I buy a Mac with a new version of OS X on it.

I can't help feeling cynical about them using free software testing services (Dick and Jane) vs. their own software testers. I wonder fi they think this is what it will take to finally get it right? Should more companies be doing this?

I'm sure they have plenty of testing going on internally. The reason for public beta testing is that there are so many possible combinations of hardware and software in (and attached to) individual computers that it's impossible to do adequate testing internally. The problem with MS is that they continually release products that they know aren't ready.

This goes on extensively in the computer gaming industry, and something I used to do quite of in my free time. Of course, I looked at as a way to try out something new and see if it was worth buying, which was rarely the result.

The advantage of this method is that you'll put something out there to a controlled or semi-controlled group and see what stupid things they might try and what response will be generated by the program. Too often, the ones who make the games are so closely intertwined with what it can or can't do, that they subconsciously know not to try certain things.

Either way, they tried to push Vista out to masses and finally relented. Regardless of the condition of Windows 7, I would wager that it is going to be pushed as the de facto operating system much harder and at a more rapid pace.
