Minitab for hourly patient census - Control Charts

Looking for additional ways to analyze and graph a years worth of hourly census hospital data. I'm only looking at 1 floor with 30 beds and the patient level of care. I want to know how many times/% of times ICU patients on that floor are >15. I've only done regression in Minitab so far(doesn't apply here) and I know control charts are a powerful tool but what type of control chart ? What else should I look into ?

Hi,

You may want to set it up in excel to determine if the count is greater than 15 for a 1, 0 logic and count the number of 1s.

More useful would be, Minitab, Control Charts>attribute charts>c for consideration. Yields the average number of beds occupied bearing in mind that the physical limitation of 30 may distort the figures if you are at full occupancy.

You don't say what you're trying to find out in the long run. There's no point in doing control charts unless you're trying to control a process in one way or another. If all you want to know is how often patients on the floor number greater than 15, it should be a fairly simple thing to do in Excel. Tell us more about what you're trying to accomplish.

sorry my last post of the data did not come out correctly. I will post data later today. My end goal ....
there is a floor with 30 beds divided by a set of hallway doors. right now the beds are ICU or step down beds(they can be both and staffed for both). what if we make 15 ICU and 15 step down only ? How many times will we have to "open the hallway door" and convert a step down bed to a ICU bed ? I'm using excel to summarize counts and %s but thought Minitab could add statistical value to this project or at least back up my excel findings.

Hi,

The excel with the 1,0 logic does not seem to support having 15 beds or less in the ICU. Cross Contamination, disruptive physical movement etc for switching to meet demand considerations ...

However, I have relaid the data for minitab.

Data distribution does not seem to want to fit the regular distributions and transformations...

Miner, in a 'today's" post gives input on Tukey Freeman.

Interestingly from the boxplot, it would seem that mid-week is where the action is... More data may bear this out or refute it...
