More than One Original Test Report - Original Print

Is it ok if you have more than one original print of test report?

I mean, the usual practice that only one print copy is signed, then copies are made and stamped as original copies.

but we had this request to have 3 original print copies for the same test report. each copy to be signed by the lab manager.

what is the common practice in doing so? do we have to say something like copy 1 of 3, copy 2 of 3 ...etc.?

Hmmm. It's a bit odd, because the point of an original is that it's the original, by definition. I can't see the value in doing this, but if you intend on abiding by the request, then so be it.

You're also mixing the terms "original" and "copy". An original copy, to me, is counterintuitive to say the least. One original exists, and copies are made from it.

Usually you have one original that's signed, and copies are made from it (usually stamped or marked to say they're copies). I can't think of any reason why more than one original would be needed, but I'm sure someone else can ;)

If there's a reason for having several originals printed and signed, then your procedure should state that three original copies will be printed and signed...and I'd also have the procedure include that any copies made from any of the three original documents will be differentiated from the originals by stamping them or marking them as 'Copies'.

It sort of defeats the term original.

With that said I have encountered an occasion when multiple parties wanted signed originals. I forgot the exact reason, but I seem to remember lawyers were involved.

If it is a customer requirement there is not much you can do. I personally would not go through a major explanation in my documentation. I would just drop a note in the Customer File/Profile ( reminder to do it for the,) identifying the specific requirements. Your copy process should take care of the rest.

I can understand the need for three such originals, possibly due to some regulatory issue. It is unusual, but your solution for copy x of y is workable.
