MSA - How to Approach a Gauge R&R Go/NoGo Attribute Study

Hi All,

I have a query about some MSA i am currently doing on a Go/NoGo test fixture used in production. The gauge checks the air tightness of an assembly by applying pressure and measuring any loss over time.

If the loss over time exceeds a fixed value (both speed of loss and total loss) the gauge flashes red and reject the part. If the loss is within the acceptable limit over a fixed period, the gauge shows green and accepts the part.

Now I need to establish the Gauge R&R and currently I am struggling with a variable study, because although the pressure loss is shown on a variable display, the resolution is only to 1 decimal place and the actual specification is 4.95 - 5 is the acceptable window, so the display lacks the required resolution.

In any case this gauge is only used as a cursory check and the actual rejection/acceptance is based on the Go/NoGo feature calculated by the electronics in the gauge. So my thought is that we should actually do an attribute gauge study rather than a variable one. Am I correct?

Also, we do have the ability to connect a secondary gauge that is used to calibrate the machine which has a higher resolution. This can show the pressure to up to three decimal places. We have used this before, but for me this is not checking the production scenario, it's actually verifying the calibration gauge to assess whether this in combination with the person calibrating is repeatable and reproducing correct results. Again, am I correct?

In summary I am going to suggest an attribute gauge study that is supported by the calibration procedure. I just wanted to run this by a few people to get their thoughts, perhaps there may even be a better suited MSA technique.

Hi Manix,

Yes, in my opinion you are correct as your production gauge can not give you the variables with required solution.

And as an example in MSA manual - I think you also can calculate the GRR for this gauge using the data from the secondary gauge and Signal detection methode

If possible, you can share the data and then possible I can double check the result for you.

Ok having now read that part of the MSA manual I can see where Signal Detection Method may be of use to me in this scenario. I have asked for the data collection to be conducted and will try to communicate my findings.
