Hi,

Just want to know more on how do you go GR&R on CMM. Do you perform GR&R separately on linear -x, -y, -z axis and for ID and OD measurement?

If the feature of interest is a location, you have an option of performing the MSA on the position or on the x,y,z coordinates. Which one you choose depends on how you tolerance or control the feature.

If the feature is size or form, use that measurement result.

How many studies you perform will depend on how many special characteristics you have (or how many are on your control plan for automotive), and how many you can logically group into families based on similarity of feature and tolerance.

Or you can use the tolerance width rather than the process variation to calculate R&R I believe ?

What are the pro's and con's of this ??
Use the tolerance width if the CMM is used for inspection to tolerance.

Use the process variation if the CMM is used for process control, for capability studies, or for statistical studies where knowledge of the sample variation is required.

My problem is that in most of the time, it is very difficult to get (or purposely produce) samples ranging from the lower to upper end of the tolerance zone, not to speak pieces that are slightly below or above the spec limits. And to verify that the samples are so and so, it may needs a even more precise measurement equipment which is always not available.

How can it be done ?

MSA 3rd edition states that the process is to be used in R&R studies unless the process is larger than the specification width. In that case, use the specification widith/6. The MSA 2nd edition gave one a choice of process or specification width.

If one uses process, try and get sample parts that vary in dimension otherwise your percentage will be high.
