MSA Studies on heat shock tests - Should we just be calibrating the oven?

We have recently had our first assessment to QS9000 and were requested to do an MSA study on a heat shock test.

A sample is heated to 150C for an hour and checked for any cracking and the shrinkage is measured with a ruler.

The auditor wants us to do the study on the thermometer that we use to check the oven temperature, but we are a bit confused as to how we should do this. Any ideas?

Should we just be calibrating the oven and doing the MSA study on the (probably unacceptable) ruler?

Did they say what kind of study they 'want' to see? An R&R?

You have 2 items - the ruler and the thermometer. I would assume they want to see that you addressed each item.

Since you are using the thermometer to monitor the oven temp, I would think you would find its uncertainty (the manufacturer should give you a +/- tolerance figure) to be sufficient, but if it's a glass thermometer there could be a reading error as well. You could do a study on the reading error.

As for the ruler, yes - you are taking a measurement with the device so an R&R would be appropriate.
