Multiple time zones in the Audit Trail

#1
Hi all,
We are software vendor and are moving our software to be capable to work in global setup (across multiple time zones). Until now we only supported its use in single time zone.

DB stores date/time in non-changeable format.

The idea of implementation was:
- in the UI, in all tabs time is presented according to user's client local time zone for easier overview, e.g. I open it in CET so I see 11:02:00
- in the Audit Trail each entry is stamped with two static time stamps: Record time (with originator time zone indication) & UTC Record time, e.g. Record time: 05:02:00 EST (record was generated in EST time zone), UTC Record time: 10:02:00

However in the details of each audit trail entry we also store some fields which contain time too e.g. "Instrument last seen: 15-Feb-22 11:01:00". These fields relates to the fields in UI. I am not sure how they should be presented?

In my opinion:
- They have to be 1:1 to what is displayed in the UI
- Audit Trail details shall not be dynamically updated between different clients from different time zones

Then with the idea of implementation I have no idea how to handle time fields in the audit trail details.

I'm not clear on this: is "Instrument last seen: 15-Feb-22 11:01:00" a single text string, or is there a defined field or value for "Instrument last seen" and then a separate datetime field for "15-Feb-22 11:01:00"?

A bit unclear, myself. However, I think you may be mixing audit trail data with how the audit trail data is presented? It sounds like the audit trail contains all the necessary information to allow it to be displayed (through some application) as local time. In other words, the data isn't dynamically changed but the way it's presented is adapted. You may need to look at the truly raw data.

Hey, so let's imagine in the UI in the "Instrument" tab we have list of instruments with many associated fields, one of them is "Instrument last seen" with the value in the separate datetime field "15-Feb-22 11:01:00". There was a change in the Instrument1 so the audit trail records that Instrument1 has been modified and in the audit trail details of this entry there is for the field "Instrument last seen": Old value: "15-Feb-22 11:01:00" and New value: "15-Feb-22 14:03:00".

In the Instrument tab: the value of "Instrument last seen" is adapted to be presented in Client's local time (that is based in CET): 15-Feb-22 14:03:00
In the Audit Trail tab: entry "Instrument1 modified" is stamped with not adapted values, that is original local time: Record time: 08:03:00 EST (record was generated in EST time zone), UTC Record time: 13:03:00

Can the details of audit trail entry be also adapted? E.g. Old value and new value for "Instrument last seen" fields? Or should they rather not be changed depending on who display them? (meaning it is not changed in the db)
