Hello All,
We are a specialty fastener company looking to enter the nuclear market. It looks as if NCA-3800 will be required. Unfortunately, ASME has been less than helpful...I need to estimate costs of this undertaking so I can take it to management, but I cannot find any estimates...anyone have any thoughts?

Can any nuclear folks help with this?

This is a niche topic here, not to mention the holidays are still keeping traffic low here. This thread may have to 'bumped' after the holidays when more people are visiting.

I'm not an expert by far...but when I was researching this I believe that there was some information on their website with some pricing information. I think the last I heard the going rates could be as high as $75,000 per 3 year cycle depending upon your business/size/number of employees.

That is the ballpark I was afraid of. I have corresponded directly with ASME. In order to become accredited, you must complete the presurvey. They cannot tell you how much it will cost for the accreditation until after the presurvey and they cannot tell you how much the presurvey will cost until it is completed...but give the range of $15000 to $25000 plus expenses.

Exactly what I found also. Pre-survey seems to be approx. 1/3 of what the final certification costs are but they don't give you a price prior to performing the audit services. :( I wish we could all do business that way.:notme: That being said, I did exchange e-mails with someone there, and he did try to be helpful to me without quoting prices.

I have worked with a couple of companies that have NCA-3800 programs and the numbers that are floating around seem to be on track. What is variable is how much will have to be done to bring the program into compliance. ASME does provide implementation services. Seems like a conflict, but that's for another thread. I did a quick google for NCA-3800 programs and came across this manual. It might help. http://www.industeel.info/datasheets/pdf/company/Manual_Ang_ed11rev0.pdf

I do know that the recertification cost, every three years is about $30K. Good luck!

Thanks to all that have responded. It appears as if this endeavour would be very cost prohibitive for a smaller organization like mine. It is a shame as our technolgy is ideal for this application. I am quite sure there are many smaller companies that have technologies that would work well in the nuclear industry and have discovered what I have...

Don't through in the towel quite yet. Talk with your customers and see if they will accept you as a commercial grade client. This means they will be responsible for your nuclear quality program. You would be subject to audit, but as you get more familar with what is needed it may make implementation easier. Another consideration is enter into a mentor - protege relationship. The industry (commercial and DOE) is screaming for qualified vendors. My final recommendation is talk with your State or local economic development department. They may be able to find some money or resources as well.

Regardless of what you decide, best of luck and come back with more quesitons in the future!

Thanks Norm. It seems that if the 'industry' is that desperate for qualified vendors, they ought to make the qualification processes more in line with ISO type accredidation by putting pressure on ASME to return to reality with these costs.
