I didn't say that risk must be quantified (expressed in numbers), although it's a good thing if it can be done.


What you're describing here is not an audit and can be (should be) accomplished with a visit to the potential supplier by cognizant people, as you suggest. No argument there.

Depends on how you define an audit. If you are there to see how they handle your order, it is an audit of how they handle everything about your order. Audit is far from limited to the requirements of ISO 9001 or one of its derivative standards.

So long as it "adds value" and is "risk-based" and [fill in your own buzz words here].

If an audit is going to be risk-based, how is the level of risk to be determined? Risk is based on probability, not on a vague feeling that something bad could happen for some unidentified cause at some indeterminate time in the future. It's not strictly about "What if." It's about "What if, and what's the probability of occurrence?"

I have spent a couple of days in a meeting room with the customer's supplier quality engineer, while they tried to convince me to change likelyhood numbers on the PFMEA our company had submitted.

I asked if they were graded on the number of issues they were able to escalate to an actionable threshold (and then had to provide an improvement plan), or if they really had a reason to think the likelihood should jump from 2 to 8. For some reason, I didn't get an answer.

That same customer has come into our shop to "approve" us doing a process, and I met with some individuals that had great feedback and opportunities to refine the process. Those SQEs were able to accomplish their tasks in an hour or two.

It should be about the risk. I agree.

Glad I found this thread...

We are having issues with a logistics and warehousing supplier. They are a local company to us and recently we have had damaged materials delivered from our offsite warehouse that they manage for us... For the record, we try and maintain good mutually supportive business relationships with our suppliers and help them to help us.
They previously had a good Operations Manager who has since left the company and the issues began not long after.
The new Operations Manager does not appear to be as communicative as their predecessor...
Our concerns have been raised about these incidents and we have made claims / complaints asking for Corrective Actions etc. With limited success / response... Due to their poor response / service, I have asked a few times to visit them to discuss our concerns and they have as yet failed to engage / co-operate.
My Managing Director has now become involved and made a direct request for me to vist them and conduct a Supplier Audit ASAP.
If I do manage to gain access to conduct the audit I won't specifically be going in there to "lay the boot into them"... I will be asking them what they do and why they do it... show me the evidence that they are complying with their aggreement to manage our offsite material storage / transportation and that they take due care of our materials in storage and during any movements or transportation etc.
Auditing them according to our requirements and their contractural aggreement to supply, not to a specific standard.

Their perfomance, or lack thereof has an impact upon us and if they continue to provide poor service their contract is at risk.

This morning I took a stealthy but direct approach. I managed to obtain the new Operations Managers direct dial number and called them...
Turns out that they had not been receiving my e-mails as they had been going to the previous Operations Managers e-mail account (an IT glitch) and that messages had not been passed on.
She apologised for this and we have arranged and agreed a date for the audit visit.
So, we may yet be able to salvage what was a good customer / supplier relationship...

I'll update here once we have completed the audit visit.
