Nested Gage R&R - Studies on Crimp Fastener Tools

I am new to this and I am in trainging for my green belt. I want to use some tools I have learned. So this is my question, in our shop we have many tools that crimp fastons and we do a destruction test before each job to make sure the tool is meeting our standards. I would like to do some studies on the tools so we can tell when they are showing signs of getting out of tol. And not waiting untilled they do. Is nesting r and r the right way to go about this? And if so how would I set it up?
Thanks for the help

Dear JCAVS88:

I am not sure that I understand your particular situation but;The short answer to your question is “YES”.

A Nested Gage R&R study is used to understand variation of a measurement system when multiple operators cannot measure the same part. Of course this happens in instances where the test is destructive.

You need to meet two assumptions:

1- All selected parts coming from the same batch are similar enough to claim they are same part.

2- The different operators measure parts from different batches. Of course, the parts need to be selected randomly.

If you are using Minitab, just Choose: Stat>Quality Tools>Gage R&R Study (Nested).

Results need right interpretation!

I hope this Helps.

I wonder if there are two issues to be addressed. One being a gage R&R to see how your measurement method/equipment sits and another to track your process and determine wear / maintenance points. This would be more along the lines of a capability study / DOE (how consistent is your process and what kind of test provides an indicator of your process).
The reason I point that out is that there are other means of “seeing” tool wear than destruction. The wire / terminal crimps are very precise when controlled properly. One plan could be destruction test at start of shift and crimp height/ depth checks throughout the shift. As the tooling wears, you should see changes in these measurements. Check with the vendor and they should be able to supply the numbers for your specific terminal / wire combinations. It’s right out of the technical manuals.
The capability defines consistency of the process, the DOE would define at what point you need to perform work to keep where you want, the R&R for verifying your method of testing. Hope this helps.

I would use the GR&R tool for the measurement system for the crimp evaluation - not for tool wear. True, the measurement system needs to be adequate to be able to adequately track tool wear of the crimp tool. But, to predict tool wear and when to change out the tool, control charting would be more appropriate. You need to pick the crimp dimension that is the leading indicator (probably crimp width, since crimp height is affected by many things other than just tool wear.) Track it on a X-MR chart using 75% of the tolerance as the control limits. (Do not use the standard X-MR control limit calculations, it is not appropriate for tool wear!! Wrong distribution! Hopefully your trainer will understand the importance of this distinction...although there is no guarantee that they will.) As soon as the width wears to 75% of the tolerance, time to start scheduling replacement.
