Never been this close to a plane crash...

Yep...my last one was a ride through the canopy and a nylon descent from about 1600 feet
Oh dear, I have never done that, but I suppose it would have been better than riding it in like I did: I was able to walk away from it, but it hurt like a :censor: for weeks afterwards and only blind luck combined with an exceedingly strong design saw me through it.

Life is a fleeting moment, isn't it?
Yes it is. I have also seen a few friends return to Terra Firma much too violently, and in one case come to severe and permanent harm. It really is a terrible thing standing there, seeing it happen and being able to do absolutely nothing about it.

Years ago, I was flying from New London CT to Pittsburg and had to fly a puddle hopper to NY first. We hit some birds while on the runway and the plane had to be towed back in. We never made it off the ground, thankfully.

Got ya beat on the altitude but mine was out of a perfectly good C141!

Right before my son got out of Ranger training they had an instructor killed during the HALO exercises due to chute failure.
You never know. That was a HALO instructor not part of the Ranger training.
Then there was the story, last week, of the guy who was taking his first tandom jump and the instructor died of a heart attack on the way down! Yikes!

Was it higher than 30,000?;)

To answer Craig.....Oh yeah, it was fully open and that NAA seat is a kick in the pants:lol:
Ouch. Were you shorter when you got on the ground?

Am I right in assuming that 1600 feet is not enough to open a parachute in time, if dropping out normally (I have no idea)?

1600 feet is more than enough time when jumping regularly...Base jumpers sometimes jump a bit lower than that from what I understand....my lowest was about 350ft from the back end of the same type of plane I rocketed out of, a real hop & pop...out, line stretch, 3 swings, in the dirt............

Shorter? People thought I had on a pink turtle-neck until they realized my chin and fanny were touching:lol:.....actually about 1/2 - 3/4 inch for a bit due to spine compression which they say is normal.......This was one ofthe things about aviation maintenance QA/QC you guys in manufacturing don't have to worry about;)

Back to the OP...we seem to have hi-jacked this thing kinda bad...

Looks like the ice thing according to the news......the auto-pilot is hard to understand, especially when coming into the landing pattern. I'd venture a guess that there was some rime-ice and air flow disruption that caused the turn & attitude changes they are talking about and that when the flight crew became aware of the problem thier corrections exasperated the problems, they lost lift and fell pretty much straight down with a higher vertical rate of decent than forward flight could overcome.

What I don't understand, though, is they turned the de-icer on soon after leaving Newark, according to reports.

When ice causes a decrease in lift, does it happen gradually or is there a point when the plane suddenly turns into a rock?
