Hello all:

Susan Hayes here. I used to be a chemist (well, I still am), but about 6 years ago I got interested in quality. Actually, I got drafted to install an ISO 9001-certified quality system for the startup I was working for at the time. We did manage it, in the usual 18 months, but about 18 mo later the company ran into serious financial difficulties, and they laid off the two of us who made up the Quality Department.

Now I'm working part time for another small company, Blasch Precision Ceramics. Quite interesting - they have had an ISO-certified system for over 10 years, but no Q manager. Responsibilities are spread out over the managers, which has worked better than I would have ever expected. The company has been growing fast, with some technically sophisticated new products, so two of us quality folks have just been hired, one as QM and myself as a quality engineer. I'm enjoying being back at work after 18 mo of unemployment. :)!

I think my pet peeve in quality is keeping paper records. And if I could change something in the Quality Universe, I would cut the number of acronyms by half. Anyway, I'm an oldster having fun in a new profession.

Has anyone out there been involved in Lean or Kaisen projects at a food bank? That is my other interest - helping out at our local food bank.

4. Company you work for and location: Abu Qir Petroleum (Natural gas exploration & production) which is based in Alexandria, Egypt

5. Length of time in quality function: About 8 years, I think it is short time in quality

6. Something personal that sets you apart: Part of the team that introduced quality in the 3 companies I worked in and made a good success of it

7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration): Trying to convince the people how quality could improve their work environment and some of this people may be from the management. :bonk:

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?: I think the quality concept right now is better than before for most of people but this could be improved if the quality could be learned in school for young people as this will improve the people mentality in their life & their work.
