Welcome to the Elsmar Cove Forums, Everyone!

The Elsmar Cove forum Body of Knowledge and Experience continues to grow. For it to continue to do so, please take a minute and Help Someone Out When You Can! Helping each other is important, so Jump Right In!

This is the Introductions thread. If you have a Question, please start a New Discussion Thread in the appropriate discussion forum and ask your question(s). Please include as many details of your specific scenario as possible. It is also a good idea to fill in your User Profile so folks have some information on your situation. You might also want to do a Search and read through some existing discussion threads to see if your question has already been asked, discussed and answered.

This is a carry-over to change the 'Introduction' questions which was requested. There are minor changes to the original questions Greenraisin posted way back in April 2001. That thread was closed (it was very long) and a new one started. Since we are sorta changing the questions, the second introductions thread is now also closed.

So - This is the 3rd "Introductions Thread"!

The 'standard' questions (which are *suggestions* and you are not required to answer any) are:

1. Name (Caution - Remember this *IS* the internet)
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
3. Industry you're in or have been in
4. Company you work for and location (Caution - Remember this *IS* the internet)
5. Number of years in the Business World
6. Something personal that sets you apart
7. Your pet peeve about business practices (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration)
8. If you could change something in the Business World, what would that be?

Please complete your Profile appropriately.

Hello Cove,

let me finally introduce myself. I am the CEO/senior engineer of a really small (yet ISO certified) Medical Device Company (4 people), and also an active scientist. I profited a great deal from the cove learning about MD certification, which in part lead us to where we are now (with the help of a good RA/QA consultant, one really needs that besides the Cove).

1. Name: Bas
2. Job Title: CEO/Senior Engineer/Scientist
3. Industry you're in or have been in: NeuroImaging/Neurostimulation/Research
4. Company you work for and location: Small tech startup in The Netherlands (send me private message for more info)
5. Number of years in the Business World: 3/15 (science/business, respecively)
6. Something personal that sets you apart: combination of scientist & entrepeneur
7. Your pet peeve about business practices: focus in certification is sometimes more on the paperwork/ass covering than on real innovation/safety/performance. Quality should come from the heart of your organization and coworkers. And of course bad coffee in the morning is a major pain
8. If you could change something in the Business World, what would that be: more business really adding value, rather than selling a lot of hot air at overpriced rates. And better coffee makers in offices.

Govt QA Guy

Hello!

Hey, Hi -
I am new to this blog, so that is why I have not said anything already. I have been working in the Quality Assurance field for more than 30 years now. I have been working for the Department of Defense, and have audited many contractors. I have basically one thing to say to you. "Get out of there as soon as you can". If upper management is only interested in having a Quality System so they can put it down to get new contracts, they are not going to succeed. If you are with them, you will not either. Upper management "Must" learn why they "Need" a Quality System, or else they will keep making the same mistakes, and will eventually wind up losing all the contracts they have, because if they cannot meet the requirements of a Quality Management System, they will never meet the requirements of contracts. They apparently have not learned that agood Quality System is a benefit to any organization. It may seem difficult at first, but it will pay off with profits, both financial and moral wise, that most people cannot imagine. Once a company gets a "reputation" of having an good, or excellent Quality Management System, the company will not have to go looking for more work, customers will be coming to you, because they will know that the processes are in control, and the product cost will be minimal for them. Upper management needs to develop a vision that looks "in the long run", not just try to make immediate profits, and the heck with the future. Anyway, I just thought I would write something, because it really gets to me when upper management, of any company, does not "backup" their Quality personnel or department. Hopefully they will learn one day how necessary Quality audits are, and how it is to their benefit, and how it all starts with upper management's 'buy-in' to how important it is to "build quality into the product", and not try to "inspect quality into the product". I'm off my "High Horse" now. I hope some of you can pass on this information, to try to get "management's buy-in". "Th-Th-Th-That's all folks".

5. Number of years in the business world. 18
6. Something personal that sets you apart. I speak fluent French
7. Your pet peeve about business practices. We measure people's performance to goals and objectives that were set a year before that don't get changed as business needs change. I can't tell you what business needs will be tomorrow, let alone a year from now! :2cents: Why can't we measure people's performance based on a day to day basis?
8. If you could change something in the business world, what would that be? Speed up the decision making process.

Govt QA Guy

Hi, Just thought I would introduce myself. I have been working as a Quality Assurance Specialist for the US Department of Defense. I audit suppliers that sell our US Military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard) hardware, software, Systems, and Services. I have been inspecting hardware, witnessing and monitoring testing, auditing processes, and buying Radar, Sonar, and Communications Systems for our military, for more than 30 years now. I am DoD cerified in Electrical, Electronics, Manufacturing, Packaging, and Software. I also have certifications in various Non-Destructive Testing techniques, including Liquid Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, Eddy Current, Ultrasonic, and Radiography. I used to have long hair, halfway down my back, but since it started turning 'Gray', I have started keeping it fairly short. Also, I started keeping it cut since I have to interface and deal with higher management at different corporations, up to the vice presidental level, at companies like Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and other DoD suppliers. I ride. I have a 1983 Yamaha, Midnight Virago, that I have been working on, since then, trying to keep it in it's original condition. I've done a fairly good job, keeping it as close to new as possible, even if I do say so myself. Anyway, that's me. I'm having fun. I joined this 'blog' to keep myself 'up-to-date' on what is going on with other people in the Quality field. I just found you. It looks like I will be able to learn a lot here. I didn't learn to enjoy learning, till after I turned 30 years old. It also looks like I will be able to 'look up' information about different QA subjects and issues that others have run into. "Th-Th-That's All Folks", for now. Your Government is in good hands, or at least it will be, when we get rid of all those 'Career' incompetents up there in Congress, and in the White House. Y'all take care, and don't lose hope. Tomorrow will be better, most of the time. - Your Govt QA Guy - My :2cents: and  as always !!
