It's an illusion. The lines they draw are not actually perpendicular to each other, which means the angles of the pieces are not really parallel when they rotate them. The pieces after moving them actually have some overlap equal to one square.

Exactly what he said...it is pretty obvious in the final drawing...

Conservation of area? At one of my previous employers they loved making cut outs to try and work out problems. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not.

Yes, you lose an entire square because the angles they cut are not right. Pretty funny nonetheless...:lol:
