Hi all,

I've recently (as in 6 weeks ago) taken a position with a Tier 2 automotive painting facility and am being exposed to a lot of terminology that I am somewhat unfamiliar with (I come from a spectrophotometric/chemistry/mining background). A few of the new analysis tools I have been asked to use by various customers include the GM "Drill Deep" process, and most recently, 8D analysis. Until now I've used the Kepner Tragoe method of problem solving and resolution.

This morning a customer requested 8D analysis on an incident where two labelled containers were received with no contents! Within the past year apparently they have also had a few other incidents where containers were mislabelled - so I would imagine this is why they have issued us this SCAR.

Would someone kindly explain to me what 8D is? I briefly looked through our quality procedures and work instructions to no avail...I feel slightly lost!

Cheers,
Karen :thanx:

I suggest you read through https://Elsmar.com/8D/ first and then come back to this thread and let us know what specific questions you have.

The bottom line is an 8-D (also called a 7-D and referred to by other names) is a Root Cause analysis and follow through intended to eliminate nonconformances.

In my opinion, the primary difference between 8D and other problem-solving approaches is the emphasis on involving a TEAM versus doing it all yourself.

I'd be interested in your reaction after you do a little more research on 8D (also try to google "8D +quality")

Welcome to the Cove, Karen!:bigwave:

We understand and sympathize with your bewilderment in encountering the jargon of automotive quality systems. Often, the folks asking you to provide an 8D have no idea what an 8D is, either; they are just checking boxes on a sheet of paper or computer screen.

:topic: Minor note for folks looking to research Karen's K-T - it is spelled
"Kepner Tregoe"

Excellent idea!! I did a search for 8D before I made this post and nothing about this area (the link you provided above) came up - did I do the search incorrectly?

Karen (feeling like an idiot for wasting people's time)

You're not wasting anyone's time. I was just trying to point you to some of the 8-D basics.

Maybe the attached file will help a bit as well.

If you search in the forums and don not find anything, try https://Elsmar.com/search.html - That will search the entire site. That link is also in the Search dropdown in the forum 'navbar' near the top of every page - It is titled 'Search Entire Site'. It does take a while to get used to how things work here.

Karen, welcome to the cove. I too felt like an "idiot" when I first began asking questions here. It is a natural transition. The cove has many resources to help.

8D is indeed a problem solving tool. on the Ford and Visteon may also be able to help you find some addtional information.

Perhaps your company may find the resources to send you for this needed training.

If I can be of any additional help, please feel free to ask.

Here is some "stuff" on GM's Drill Deep which is also posted elsewhere here. Just a side bar - our entire workforce was trained in the K-T approach. While we have "backed off" of that methodology, some of us still use it and it is fairly easy to transfer into the "8D" format.

Although the DDW (drill deep and wide) is a great tool, we are in process of establishing one generic (for lack of a better word) probelm solving tool for our facility. I like drill deep and wide and the Global 8D is good.

Howdy KarenD

Hey there, and welcome to the forum. If you can't find what you are looking for here, trust me, it don't exist.

There are several different ways that various industries, and companies within those industries have approached corrective/preventive action. Maybe one is better, maybe not -- but most have all the same ideas, packaged a little differently.

8D stands for eight disciplines.. there are also 7Ds, and 5-ways, and four-phases.. and la-de-da.. yadayada.. A google search will find all sorts of information. I even used those google links to start writing OUR corrective/preventive action procedure:

8D overkill

Hi Karen

I am currently working with a second tier Automotive supplier who (every day) get a request from their major customer for an 8D for what may be a single defect.

We are being swamped often with overlapping problems, we had one problem that was caused by containment action for another problem.

The Automotive Industry is a breed all its own. In other industries I make sure that the concept of non-conforming product control and corrective action are well separated so that you only concentrate on the "really important" issues.
