Registrars are supposed to maintain a "chinese wall" (google the term) between advice and registrar functions, similar to stockbrokers/investment advisers.

I checked site www.xlp.com - About SAI Global - and found no offers of CB Registration. I have used them extensively to train our Lead and Internal auditors worldwide, and have recieved my own Lead Auditor certifications through XLP. I know they do Gap Check Analysis, and are leaders in preparing and training in all Quality Standards. They are members of QuEST Forum as well. Just to be on the safe side I e-mailed my XLP contact. I'll let you know if I'm mistaken. I'd be surprised if they are since they never tried to become our CB Registrar.

Sidney is right. If you click on the SAI Global banner from the xlp site you linked to you get the full range of group services. They are not allowed to link training with certification or imply that you will get an easy ride from SAI if you use XLP. Similarly they are not supposed to promote XLP from within SAI certification. Here's response from XLP - Excel Partnership, Inc. Now SAI Global -
Of course we are not a Registrar; we are the N.A. Professional Services division of SAI Global. The SAI location in OH is the Certification/Assurances group.location.

We can train people/companies to prepare them for certification, however we can not provide implementation consulting support to them if SAI is their Registrar because it would be a conflict of interest.

Note: XLP home office is CT. I guess that's how they maintain their Chinese Wall. Learn something new everyday. I also agree you can find some great local consultants - that is why I suggested joining ASQ and attending meetings

A possible reason for them not trying to become your registrar could be because of their previous engagement (training/consulting) with your organization. That could have created a conflict of interest, especially if you are certified to TS or AS.

Excel Partnership Inc is now SAI Global Professional Services NA, being purchased by SAI Global about three years ago. The company, Excel Partnership, isn't and wasn't ever a registrar. They keep a distinct identity even being owned by SAI. The XLP.com head office is in CT, other parts of SAI are in NJ and OH, as was stated. Excel's consultants work almost exclusively for Excel.

There are many other organizations who consult and provide training/materials but they aren't affiliated with any registrar, either.

Trust me, I know a thing or two, too............

And who said that XLP is a Registrar? What I said is that XLP (now SAI Global Professional Services NA) is a related body of SAI Global which offers accredited management system certification. Isn't that statement correct?

Well no, not if accuracy is important.

SAI Global is the 'mothership' to a number of organizations. They offer a variety of services and perform a number of functions. I believe that their roots are in standards writing, a bit like ANSI is here. True, they have a registrar division (in NJ), but this shares nothing functionally with Excel Partnership.....

I was attempting to make a distinction about SAI, their role, other parts of the company and what has been known, by many, as Excel Partnership.

Sidney - let's not lose focus, your original message did imply that xlp was not separate from SAI Global, and my proposed objectivity theory was not true - no one is questioning your knowledge so the "Trust me I know a thing or two...." isn't necessary. I liked the Google on Chinese Wall comment.
