Hi All

A few days ago my boss called me in to the office and has asked (told) me to start preparing for ISO 9001. I've never even so much as looked at this before and from what I've seen from just trawling through the millions of websites it would appear it's going to take a bizarre amount of work. First Question - where do I start? Is there anyting out there which explains things in plain English for the novice? My company is a service provider only.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Re: New to ISO..Please Help!

I would suggest you go to an ISO training class. That would give you a much better idea of where to start and what to do. There are good companies around who can help you get started in training for quality management systems. If you want to send me a private message we could talk about this further.

Re: New to ISO..Please Help!

Purchase a Copy of the Standard
It is hard to start a trip without knowing your destination. You will need a copy of the standard to get started. All ISO standards are available through the International Organization for Standardization.

Establish Management Commitment
Management must know why they are implementing the ISO standard. The initial reasons may be market pressures, or requests from clients. This may not be enough for all managers to buy into and support the project. Educating management on what the system is, what it is not, and what it will do for your company is the best way to gain the commitment you need from management. Group training sessions are also an effective way to educate management.

Gap Analysis
The first step in planning your implementation is to perform a Gap Analysis, a comparison of your current quality system to the requirements of the ISO 9000 standard. The Gap Report explains what you will need to add to your current quality system to meet the requirements, and what you have in place that already meets the standard.

Project Plan
Using the Gap Report, develop an implementation approach, project plan, and time line.

* Identify the staff members who will be leading and coordinating the project.
* Determine your approach to the project. Team-based projects are most effective.
* Establish your timeline for implementation.
* Plan a project "kick-off" to educate and inform everyone in the facility about your ISO implementation project.

Hope this helps you....All the best.

Re: New to ISO..Please Help!

If yours is a going concern, chances are that you have a LOT of what's needed already in place. It just needs to be identified and organized. The sugggestion to take a class is a good one. Also, you just happen to be in the best place/site in the world to learn about ISO 9001 and ask questions...

You are not the only person who has gone through this.

Re: New to ISO..Please Help!

Thanks. Sadly my management team aren't ready to commit to spening any money on this yet. I can't even get a copy of the standard. I'm working from a document called ISO 9001 2008 - Translated into Plain English and trying to produce a rough draft/idea of what's going to be required. Hopefully then 'they' will see the need to get the latest standard. Thanks again

Ouch!!!! You have my most sincere sympathies... :(

I don't want to sound like the harbinger of doom and gloom... but I hate to tell you that without management's committment, you'll be doing a WHOLE lot of this: :frust: I know that first hand... at my previous job, I got almost the same mandate from management... get us ISO certified. After I stopped :lmao: I told them that I needed a copy of the standard and I wanted to attend some training classes and that it would costs a few $$$. After THEY got done :lmao: I knew I was doomed.

If your management team isn't even willing to pony up the few dollars for the actual standard, they are going to have a hard time understanding that Management committment to the Quality Management System is a critical part of ISO 9001.

I wish you the best of luck. The good folks on this forum can really help out a lot -- so you are in the right place. For nothing else other than support and advice.

Cheers!!!

Mike
