New to ISO 9001 - Where to start implementation

Hi Leonardo!

As you will have read, I'm VERY new to this ISO lark.

The lovely people here are a great resource so first bit of advice - listen to what they say.

It's quite true that in order to start you need a copy of the ISO standard. You can't do a thing without it.

The post from John Broomfield on 25th May has just suddenly realised itself on my side. You can't write a Quality Management System without having detailed/documented business processes and procedures. You can't put quality to something that doesn't exist. We just spent a week trying to do it that way round - wasted a week!

I'm worried about your 6 month time line. I have no idea if that's possible and will wait for other Covers to reply on that side.

First Step (i think) document what you do and how you do it.

I've been trawling through a lot of documents and templates and have a fair few saved - if you need anything on that front just shout and I'll see if I have anything that could help you.

:)

Re: New to ISO..Please Help!

Hello you wonderful lot! :bigwave:

Todays big news is that 'The Boss' has relented and has booked us an appointment with British Standards and one of their consultant fellows will be paying us a visit on 11th June to discuss the ISO requirements!!! :applause:

I'm reading up on all I can within this forum between now and then.

Thought I'd share the good news...also, just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all of you for your support and advice. (Especially to trainerbob, Marc and Sponge Mouse)

So glad I found this site!!

Keep you posted and of course, will be running back to ask questions on a daily basis no doubt.

:thanx:

If ever you find yourselves in North West England, the beers are on me.

:tg:
Sorsola,

How about the Fenwick Arms in Claughton?

First of all, Thank you to Sorsola for your first bit of help, I think you just saved me that 'wasted week'. Thank you.
At present, we have just played a little roleplay game, I rang my partner, and arranged a demonstration, and we followed through what the process was from phone call to sale, and delivery. It is a bit different to what I thought the process was, and we have documented that, and looked at where obvious error were.

By role playing the process, we can now start to write this, and also allocated the resources and responsibilities. I will let you all know how this works, and will still keep my ears open for any advice. The clock is ticking and a Ithink we need a little :magic:.but with help we may make it! once we have licked this 9001, then we have Machine directive TCF and then just as a bit of fun, 14001 HA. well, guess I will be getting to know you all very well........

But I am an engineer/designer.. not a quality systems guy. I am a bit lost and need some help please.

i am too, both engineer & production personel. dont worry 'bout it, quality ISO particularly) will flow smooth with our system automaticaly, so dont worry, just have fun learning

another addl advice, try mapping all the process first so that you could get a picture. you can start by mapping the summry of the whole process then mapping it by sub process.

Leonardo,
I agree with spong mouse. Look at your proposed business and see exactly how you plan to do your business. From that you will see your processes and support processes that you will be using in your business. Once you have your processes(with metrics for them) you will be able to see how the standard applies to them and to your organization. With a strong effort I am sure you can beat your 6 month timeline for having your system in place. The trick will be to get certification in the same time frame. Good luck to you. Send me a private message if you need more help and I will see if I can coerce some of my consultants into giving you some time for free.

I am a little overwhelmed at the help that is already coming from members of this site, and my most heartfelt thanks to you all. As part of this process, myself and my business partner are going to post the process we have taken, and if anyone sees an obvious mistake, if they will be kind enough to point this out, then we will correct this mistake. If anyone would like more in-depth info from us, then we can email this over. Hopefully this entire thread will end up as a step by step process to 9001. Well as a start, as has been mentioned, we are a pre-trading company that needs to trade, and can't till we have ISO, and CE. The problem was how do we get iso on a process that we have never used:frust:

Well, that is where the roleplay came in. And I am now beginning to see the reason for ISO9001. We played the game of ordering from ourselves, by phone, and also through our website and wrote down every step we took. We 'virtually' put supplier orders together, we then realised we actually did not have a comprehensive build list. We also realised that our website is appallingly difficult to navigate, and we found out how we would be able to cope with an order (not well). Having done the initial trial, and then worked out what we really need to do, we have the outline of a proceedure. Yes it needs more work, but it is a start. Tomorrow we have to refine this. then start filling in the blanks. :applause:to everyone who has (and will ;)) help us.

:thanks:

And, as you say, you've begun to see the value of a quality system, and having some documentation. Capturing it on paper in some way allows you to test it... see if it works... change it. (Just one of the reasons for doing it.)

Don't fall into the trap of writing down 'everything' though. Especially in a small business, keep it as minimal as you possibly can.
