Also get a copy of the ISO 9004 standard. It has a lot of good stuff in it. Highlight really good parts, and show some of the best pieces to mgt. Show them the value ($$$) of some of it and they may become interested.

RANT ALERT!!!!!!!!

Hi All

So, a member of the British Standards Institute is coming to visit us tomorrow to discuss our ISO intentions.

The Senior Manager who originally decided on the ISO path has somehow managed to take a back seat and pass this all over to another Senior Manager.

I've just discussed tomorrows meeting with said manager, and this was the general outcome;

He hasn't read the ISO requirements
He hasn't even skimmed section 5 - Management Responsibilities
He doesn't intend to 'bring' anything to this meeting, he's there 'just to observe'

Question is - does anyone out there think there is any point with my company continuing with ISO whilst the 'mindset' is...well, as it is???

Why not explain how your company's management system converts needs into cash (and could be doing this a lot better) instead of expecting the managers to understand the benefits of paying attention to their management system by reading ISO 9004 or ISO 9001?

They won't! For all kinds of reasons. However, if you were to do some kind of review with them and, as John suggests, relate it to cost avoidance, cost reduction or cost containment (for example) - you'll more than likely get some attention. Or try to relate it to some current issues that are costing them customer satisfaction or causing lost sleep.

We had a few issues with a previous project a while back. I'll do some digging and make the comparisions.

Yup.

Interpret it to them in the language and terms that will be of interest to them. Don't expect them to read it. As Andy says, they won't.

It's all just sheer good business sense, nothing weird or arcane. But trying to force them to read & understand 9001/9004? Forget it - that's usually wasted effort & not a good way to proceed. Digest it for them and make it intelligible - interpret it for your company and it's situation: that's your job.

BSI visited us on Friday.

There's now a big managers meeting planned for tomorrow...to discuss if the cost is worth it and to decide if we really are going to press ahead with it all.....

No news so I'll carry on regardless.


8.3 - Control of Non Conforming Product.

As I've mentioned before, we are only a service provider. Companies approach us and ask us to test their computer software. We don't fix it, sell alternatives etc etc

Before we start testing we issue countless documents detailing what we'll be testing, how and when. This gets submitted to our clients and they then have to sign it all off before the testing commences.

I can't see that we'd ever have a 'Non Conforming Product'...but I can't exclude it! So what angle do I need to put on this in order for it to fit?

Hi

If you think of your test protocols as the "product", non-conforming product could be as simple as a test that is faulty or doesnt acheive the expected result.

So the outcome could be how you stop others from using the faulty test and what Corrective Actions you take to prevent it reoccuring.
