NOT spacing Internal Audits out over the year (9001)

Hello,

I'm a previous infrequent member who after returning from a few years' break (having babies) can't remember my old username and password. I guess I have a new name now!

I'm setting up our Internal Audit schedule for 2014 - we have approximately 24 audits scheduled across 6 branches (cities). In the past, I would have scheduled 2 per month, and spaced them out evenly across the cities (one every 3 months, for example). However, with no auditors in some branches, I am wondering whether I can schedule all 4 audits for a branch within the same month - and then no further audits for that branch for the year. This way, I would be able to travel to each of the locations once each year and do all of the audits myself. Three of the cities are quite close together (though distant from me), so I would end up doing half of the years' audits in just a couple of days. Is this allowable? I would appreciate any thoughts and opinions.

Thanks,
GD

You can do anything you want as long as it meets you procedure & schedule and is effective for you.

Of course you know you're going to get all kinds of if, ands, wherefores and how-tos don't you?

I have the same scenario a few years ago where 3 sites were quite far away. I have done the audits annually, at least 3 months before the scheduled external audit by the CB, in order to rectify any non-conformances before the external audit.
I was lucky in that the people at the different sites were very dedicated and had fully embraced the quality and food safety culture and took responsibility of the system.

Figure out what is effective for you. What may be the most effective this year, may not be what is the most effective next year, but the requirement is effective, not most effective.

Keep in mind that the schedule needs to take into consideration "status and importance" of the topics to be audited. You get to determine the "status and importance".

What has "status and importance" this year may not next year.

Just get it done this time around and figure out what improvements you want to make for next time.

What is the risk to your organization if there is a year's gap between any internal audit at a particular site? No identifiable risk no problem I think. Isn't internal audit best practice to use a risk based approach? Sure I read something like that once. Wait awhile, someone with experience will be along to answer.

You don't have to have a calendar of audits planned out in front of you! It a common practice, yes, but unless your schedule aligns with those things Jim mentions (based on status and importance) or you have some type of crystal ball, trying to figure what to audit in 6, 12, 18 or 24 months is futile - hence your frustration!

Think status, importance and plan your audits based on what that means to you. If you substitute the words "risk" and "impact" that is what is a risk and who is impacted by that risk, you'll have a better chance of auditing something important. Also if you audit processes (effectively) you shouldn't have to worry about meeting the all ISO requirements either.
