I've just been made aware of the ASME B1.21.1 standard indicating "rapping" is ok to correct nicked threads.

Where can I find the controls on this rapping process, because as I see it, it could be interpreted as a method to just re-ream the thread with the gauge to make it pass.

Any guidance would me much appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't have an answer unfortunately but you might contact a gage manufacturer. I had a minor diameter issue while checking a shop made plug gage. I sent an email to Vermont Gage and they were kind enough to point me in the right direction. They also gave me the exact section of a standard that dealt with my specific question.
