I think, I saw him in the Metrology division booth during AQC,Toronto. He offered to sign the Metrology handbook.(if I recollect my memory). In the recent days, his name has come up more often in the metrolgy space than any one I know. He also use to write a good article called "measure for measure" in Quality Progress.
His services to development of metrology will always be remembered.
You are, and I understand the final Measure for Measure will be a tribute, with recollections from those who knew him. In my opinion, an appropriate farewell to a Metrologist who contributed so much.
I benefitted a great deal from his many article that I read over the years. He was one of the reasons I was able to grow in knowledge of the Metrology field when I was in it.
I was fortunate to meet him once. He is truly one the gaints in his field and will continue to serve as an inspiration to those that try to follow in those large footsteps.
It is times like this we need think of those who have helped us (living & dead) to get where we are. If they are still here, we need to take the time to let them know what they have done for us
I worked with Mr. Stein on an audit and as a "young pup" I was very appreciative of the knowledge he imparted. We had our share of personality conflicts, but for his amount of knowledge and willingness to share it, he ALWAYS had (and still has) my respect and gratitude!
