A few thoughts...

(1) Response time for filling a request
(2) Claims for damaged goods
(3) Warehouse inventory as a percentage of ??? (this may be more of a business objective, but it probably influences (1) and (2))

Look back at the things that have "stung" your department/company...these might be candidates for measurable quality objectives.

Take a look at your processes in the warehouse. Ask yourself the question "what is my objective"? in each of these.

You should be able to come to a decision on what to measure that is meaningful and directly responsive to your actual objectives.

So my advice is don't try and think of something creative, let the processes tell you what it should be.

Warehousing is inventory, it is waste. They measures you need are type and time. For each type of item, how long from purchase (arrival in inventory) to use?

Cut time and you cut costs.

Then you get promoted!

Hmmmm - in a maufacturing environment one quick one that comes to mind is length of time stored in useable product condition. (record & measure reasonable shelf life before rust removal/plating upgrade/re-packaging is needed)

Anyone else have ideas?

Warshe,

Good points Dan, and not knowing the entire situation I would also ask:

Is a measurement for warehousing required?

Would the measurement be part of Management Review and included in the business plan objectives?

Would the measurement be value added to the company?

I guess it depends on what functions are specified for the warehouse department, as defined in the quality system documentation.

Establish the WH department quality objectives by understanding its function. Based on ISO 9000 glossary, the word function means "purpose". So why do we have a WH department? Answers can include:
  • to ensure availability of materials;
  • to prevent damage, loss, deterioration of stored items;
  • to release or issue materials on time
From the above functions, measurable objectives can be set (see also clause 6.2.1). For example:
  • to ensure availability of materials --> Availability of stock not lower than XX units/qty; Variance on inventory not greater than XX%
  • to prevent damage, loss, deterioration of stored items --> Spoilage rate not greater than XX%
  • to release or issue materials on time --> 100% on time release of requested materials

Some other KPIs for warehouse:
1. Manufacturing schedule adherence - ensuring raw materials are available as requested by production
2. Floor space utilization - for maximizing your warehouse space
3. Requested items issuing time

Hope the above helps.
