One method of risk mitigation I am fond of is verification using a "working standard". For example, if the device requiring cal is an LCR meter that you use to measure capacitance, pick a "working standard" capacitor and measure it at some reasonable interval and if the reading is what it should be, you have added assurance the unit is still gonna do what you want it to do in an acceptable manner until you can get it formally calibrated.
