Yes, I will be training employees next week on label content and 16 sections of the SDS.

I just can't comprehend having to go back and review MSDS sheets that are 5-6 years old, and input all of this information on a new SDS sheet.

It seems daunting, is this what everyone else is doing?
How do you find the time to do it?

I am quality/regulatory manager, probably a lot of you in the same boat,
extra time is at a minimum

I am interested in hearing how you guys/ladies are dealing with this.
Thanks,

Remember you only need MSDS sheets for items still in your facilities. If the chemical is no longer there you do not need an SDS for it.

Just went to the Seminar on GHS yesterday and the same thing crossed my mind (being the quality manager for 2 sites) about undertaking the requirements of GHS/SDS. :nope:

You may need to read the fine print about maintaining records for 20 yrs, 30 yrs or forever based upon material and exposure because the decision to toss or not renew could come back to haunt ya really bad

If you scan in the old MSDS sheets, you can save them for as many years as you want without any effort. Probably a good idea for many companies.

Thank you Helmut for your expertise,

I know by June 1, 2015 new SDS will need to be
in new format.

If I have OLD chemicals in house by then and still have
the OLD MSDS, do I need to update the OLD MSDS
to the NEW SDS format???

Or, just make sure that AFTER June 1, 2015, all my chemicals
come in with the new SDS format???

Thanks to all,

Companies are not required to send new safety data sheets to previous customers who may still have the product in inventory. However, they must send new safety data sheets when sending the first shipment after June 1, 2015. New safety data sheets do not have to be created for chemicals no longer produced. Good info on the topic available at www.schc.org.

I think it is a safe bet that virtually all new chemical purchases from companies will have the new format by then. Suppliers will probably have online access to new formats, for most old chemicals still in your inventory. That will leave a very few chemicals with the old MSDS sheets. I would suggest you handle those on a case by case basis.

PS: This change would be a great time to consider switching to electronic sheets, rather than the labor involved in keeping those old yellow paper binders up to date. Put all copies of your SDS / MSDS sheets into an electronic folder on your server. Have your IT people make read-only access to the folder available from every computer, and you have a simple, easy way to meet the requirements to make them accessible in a very labor saving way. I recommend that if you have any significant chemicals, (i.e.: acid tanks), a copy of those should also be laminated and posted at the point of use, as well.
