One ton of a man

Dear Covers:

Just found this news story about Patrick Deuel, a former restaurant manager who once weighed more than half a ton.

*** Dead Link Removed ***

His wife was scared and did not know what to do. He was unable to get any help since no hospital would admit him. He has finally be able to get some medial help and has lost 321 pounds so far, with expert medial supervision. His goal is to walk out of the hospital soon. God Bless him and let's pray for his speedy recovery to good health. Where there is a Will, there is Way.

Good for Him!

That's inspirational. If he can do that I should be able to lose the 15 extra I'm carrying! I'm praying for him too!

Hate to seem insensitive but....

If his wife was scared, why did she keep feeding him so much?

If he can't walk, he can't get food. Unless he was eating the family pets as they passed by, someone was bringing it to him, and a LOT of it.

I have great sympathy for people who are in circumstances beyond their control, but geesh!

I'm tired of hearing about people with a "condition" that prevents weight loss. These people have a condition known as lazy stupidity and do NOTHING to correct it. I bet less than 2% of all mortally obese people actually suffer from a medical condition that would prevent their weight loss. The other 98% are slobs.

The only people I see running at the track are ones that are in shape, or need to lose 10 pounds or so. I NEVER see really large people who eventually get thinner. Does that tell you anything? They are all in the hospital getting their stomach stapled due to a lack of discipline or they are laying on the couch with a box of twinkies and 4 Big Macs getting bigger.

Eat less, do more. Unless you are on steroids or retaining water due to some illness, it is a matter of numbers.

Forget Atkins and carbs and fat and gimmicks you buy off Home Shopping Network, blah, blah, blah. Try simple arithmetic instead. If you burn more calories than you take in, you WILL lose weight.

I too hope he recovers, but I find him more stupid than inspirational.

Possibly that there is a great tendency to simply give up once you have passed some kind of limit? If so, we should be very wary of approaching that limit. Preventive action...

Hmmmm.

A "point of no return" so to speak?

You might be on to something.

I think that point it is somewhere around the first bag of Doritos.

About getting fed (up?)

Dear Carl:

You are absolutely right about someone feeding him, if he could not even move. I thought about that too.

What was his wife doing all that time, as he gained weight? Or, think about this. He obviously has no job and his wife is probably working to take care of the family. He used to be a restaurant manager at one time. May be that's where the bad habit started - eating free meals offered by the employers - many restaurants do.

Anyway, even more scary to me was that no hospital would admit him. This obviously means he/his wife tried to get help but couldn't. Even now, the article talks about a several million dollar price tag for his treatment. Several million dollars? How come? I don't understand this.

Whatever be the reasons, he seems to be trying and has finally got the help that he needs.

I was moved when I read that article and decided to call attention to it. If he can do it, anyone who needs to lose 20 to 50 pounds and move from the Obese (BMI > 28) to Overweight category can definitely do it. There is much to be gained and many health effects, especially if you are above 40. According to recent studies, many young adults are also chronically overweight and/or obese. This has long term consequences. This article should be posted on the walls in every high school for that purpose as well.

If you would like to check your own Body Mass Index, the following link takes you to a calculator. BMI = Weight in kg/Square of height in meters.

Charmed,

It will definitely cost millions, and since I sincerely doubt that a half ton guy is going to be able to pay, you and I are going to pick up the tab.

Think about it, he needs a special room to hold him. 2 beds pushed together to prop up his lardass, a special team of doctors to assess the situation, nutritionists to monitor caloric intake and diet, gastroenteroligists to make sure his system is functioning, heart doctors to assess stress on his heart etc, etc.

Day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, because if you expect him to get up and walk out any time before spring of 06, your crazy.

A 1 week stay in the hospital for something fairly minor is going to rack up about $50,000. Imagine his cost.

No hospital would take him because of legal ramifications.

What if the beds push apart or collapse?

Can you imagine the lawsuit that is going to follow when this guy dies? (and although I hope he doesn't, the odds are he is going to die soon)

The family is going to be all over them saying the treatment was "too aggressive", they were not capable of handling his "special needs" etc, etc.

They will win and you and I will pay through rising insurance costs to cover it.

The family is probably going to move from whatever rat trap they are living in into a house bigger than yours and mine combined and we are going to pay the mortgage.

Sad but true.

BTW, I am 6 feet tall and weigh 190, so I am anything but "skinny". I also run 2 miles, 3 times a week, workout with my daughter's soccer team, kayak, mountain bike, etc.

I eat what I want and drink beer if I feel like it, but I also realize if my activity goes down and my Burger King bill goes up, there is going to be a definite cause and effect relationship occuring.

At least there is some hope for him and that he has people around him who care, but right - why wasn't action taken about 500 pounds ago. Here is a story of a woman who wasn't so lucky and didn't weigh nearly as much.
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/content/martin_stlucie/epaper/2004/08/12/m1a_mcbody_0812.html

And while it may be true (though really it was just a guess) that 2% might have a medical condition or genetic makeup that would make them predisposed to obesity, I wonder how many of that 98% have some serious mental problems. Case in point - the woman from Palm Beach (see link to article). How does anyone in any sort of right mind spend 6 years on the couch? And why didn't her family tried to get her help after 3 months of that?

Interesting side note - according to All Things Considered dated 8/11/04 - Obesity is no longer considered to be a disease and that doctors are now receiving training on how to talk with their patients regarding obesity.

One thing I find disturbing about the Nation's obesity problem is the lack of accountability. Sure, we are confronted with fast food establishments on every corner, our Physical Eduction programs in public schools have all but completely disintegrated, and we sitting in front of our computers and televisions more and getting out less, but we (of course) make the ulitimate decision about our lives - we are the ones with the final control, but we rarely take the responsibility. Instead we blame video games and McDonald's.

I don't have a weight problem myself and so I find it hard to understand why it becomes a problem for some people. I was blessed with a healthy metabolism and I realize for others it doesn't come as easy. But having known some very fine individuals who were obese or bordering on, I would be reluctant to categorize them as a "lardass." I do however place harsh judgement on the parents of children that are obese - especially when I see them at the super market buying super big donuts for an after dinner snack for their kids.

I read the story. Really, really sad.

Methinks the real problem that we may be facing here in the U. S. may simply be the easy access that we have to the kitchen, the refrigerator, and the pantry.

The kitchen is the centerpiece of a house with a refrigerator loaded with all kinds of goodies, with all kinds of junk food in the pantry next to it. Junk food commercials on TV all day long (sending subliminal messages asking us to eat, eat, and eat!) I remember, when I was a kid and went to visit my grandparents (not here in the U. S.). It was a big house in a small village, much much bigger than any house that I have lived in here in the U. S. But, the kitchen was way way in the back of the house. We had to take a long walk just to get to the kitchen from the front porch when my mom and grandma was ready to serve coffee (every morning at 10:00, my grandfather had to have his coffee four times a day) or lunch, or dinner.

I say, some architect should seriously think about how to redesign American homes and hide the kitchen somewhere.....away from view. Long shot, but might just help.

P. S. Don't be surprised if I have started a trend. We moved many things from the pantry in the kitchen upstairs after we finished our basement. This was a few years ago. Now, if you really want to have that potato chip, you have to walk down and walk up to get it. Most of the time, you won't find any - my wife has stopped buying them too - but now and then she teases with some junk food down there!
