It seems incredible that Boeing would post documents without checking compatibility with different browsers and operating systems and at the very least having a pop up notice that the material is only capable of being viewed by certain browsers OR saying to download an alternate in a different format.

Lots of companies do it. Even Tracey's employer does it (if you have a Mac you can't download .pdf patient forms so they can fill them out ahead of time). Even running Windows in a VM on a Mac doesn't work.

You can tell the state of a company's IT department when things on their web site only work with MS Windows. Pretty lazy/lame/stupid.

Now that you mention it, I have run across a number of websites ONLY accessible via Internet Explorer (I suppose that means stuff probably won't work on Macs. Only a few of those have a popup which says [paraphrased] "use IE to enjoy our site"

:topic: Having worked on projects to develop customer facing web applications, browser compatibility is complicated and time consuming. Different browsers and even different versions of the same browser can handle the same code differently. User settings and plugins also increase variability. We had a limited list of browsers / versions that we tested and supported as well as a recommended browser to optimize the experience. We checked usage reports to confirm that we were supporting the browsers that the majority of our customers used. It is not necessarily programmer laziness that a website doesn't work in all browsers, but rather a finite amount of resources / time to accommodate all browsers.

This is a case of being able to download .pdf files. It's not difficult to code that for any browser. Heck, just put in a link to the file. Every browser can download a .pdf file from a link. Nothing special needed.

And in reality there are only Firefox, Safari, IE and potentially Opera so that's 4 browsers of significance that a web site has to work with.

And in this case it's not even a browser issue per se. It's a "Macs can't do it" issue. Usually this is where ActiveX is required. So - The programmers are programming *only* for Windows PCs. Any company these days which is coding for PCs only are going to be out of luck with regard to tablets and smart phones, not just Mac computers.

I can say the link in Post 5 doesn't open on an iPhone or iPad. I just tried it - Doesn't work.

According to the information here, Google Chrome has a pretty hefty share of the browser market, being essentially tied with Firefox at this point.

What happens if you right-click and do "Save target as..." with that link?
