Opening Up Tolerances - We have over 6000 live drawings - help please

I work for a company and we have over 6000 live drawings. We have recently reviewed the general tolerance / open tolerance on the drawings to open it up, because the previous tolerances were unrealistic and just way too tight.

To up-issue every drawing individually is a huge task and would be very time consuming for our limited resource.

Is there a quick way that we could issue something to override the general tolerace box on the drawing and apply the relaxed general tolerance whilst failling in line with good configuration practice?

Any help, advice or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thank-you.

This could probably involve an engineering change or similar, depending on what controls you have in place. The change request can be broad enough to encompas all drawings assuming that these are internal drawings and do not require customers' approvals. In such an instance the change can specify a general tolerance change across the board. Another approach to consider is creating a 'design specifications' document that will allow you to specify general tolerances and only special tolerances on the individual prints. This is along the lines of Carol's suggestion. You could state that the new document supersedes the title block tolerances. For example GE has such a manual that specified tolernaces based on dimensions, processes, finish, defects, etc.

You are a little stuck if the changes require customers' approvals. In such a case you'll have to follow your customers' guidelines.

Hope this helps a little.

Wow good for you!

"Tight specs loosely enforced are the death of quality."

I quote this all the time, but I can't recall where I got it? Was it Juran?

Thank-you for your suggestions. The supplemental specification seems a good way forward I think. I am talking to our 3rd party assessor along these lines.

We are the definition of tight specs loosely controlled, when they don't need to be tight in the first place!!

By overiding the general tolerance block, how do you know that you will not open up the tolerance too much? Could this possilby result in quality issues?

Phil,

We have considered this, and it still remains a slight risk. The majority of components we have an issue with, have specific tolerances on the key dimensions which affect the fit or the way we interface product.

The fact that suppliers supply product away from this is another topic. We are fortunate in that we still have goods inwards inspection which does capture these issues, and we are now starting to manage suppliers properly.

I am new to the company and my remit from the Directors is to get us back working to drawing. Hence the original question, as at the moment, we end up raising any number of concessions.

Thanks.
