Operation Control for Reducing Electricity Consumption

Hi.
We have determined one of our significant aspects is "use of electricity". I am wondering if I can find an example of an operation control for "energy conservation". Since the scope could be plant wide and would make it hard to write an Op control, we plan to target just our main machine which uses most of the electricity by better operating procedures.
Any suggestions, templates examples would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Hello Arunmit.
You are right that this applies company wide. When you say that you target your main machine with some operation control, how did you derive or arrive at this ?
As far as I can see, when you use the main machines, there is 'use of electricity' and people who are responsible for operating those machines either operate for output or idle the machine. You could have any control put in place to avoid the idle run of the machines including an instruction, if this meets your purpose.
But this seems to me rather indirect. I have a couple of questions and seek your response to take it further:
1. Have you conducted an energy audit and did that direct you to the main machine / s as the biggest source of energy use amongst your total energy use ?
2. What has been done to ensure that the energy used by the main machine is optimum, if the study indicated that such possibilities are open ?

Do not underestimate the power of your operators for this exercise - they can come up with great ideas :)

Initiate a meeting with them !

Here's some I see all the time....

"When you leave the room, turn off the lights"

"When your done with equipment that uses electricity, turn it off"

"When you go home, turn off the computer"

Another area you should look into is 'Wikipedia reference-linkEfficient energy use'. An example is having variable speed drive for the main machines. It can save you much more than better operating procedures and control.

Thanks for all your answers..
Somashekar- yes and energy audit and meters confirm that our main press is the greatest use of electricity and gas (not surprising- because it is the size of a football field)..VFD's - however we are looking at power factor correction- to your point, Harry. Our best bet is to turn off sections of the machine when not in use or during set up and better start up procedures. I am just having a hard time wording an "operational control" for this..

Perhaps that is a management program towards your conservation of natural resources. That must be fine.
An operational control can perhaps be more relevant in areas where it can control directly the conservation of natural resources. As an example if you use some consumable in your process and your effective and optimum usage can directly bring about conservation, then some sort of system or dispensing that can control the use of this consumable and avoid excess use (wastage) added with operator instructions will fall better under operations control.

A documented operational control procedure is required only as long as it's "absence could lead to deviation from the environmental policy, objectives and targets".

The standard stipulates that such operations are carried out under specified conditions by stipulating operating criteria in order to ensure that those operations do not exceed the specified performance standards.

It's very difficult to control/ manage the aspect plant wide unless specific responsibilities, objectives & operating criteria are defined at different functional /sectional levels for achievement of particular goals.

As for procedures, these can be step-by-step work instructions or process flow diagrams or data sheets with the following information:

1. Specific operating criteria
2. Controls that need to be in place for operating the equipment/ process ( this can inter alia include Manufacture’s operating instructions)
3. Maintenance schedule and specifications (per manufacturer's instructions)
4. Training requirements of the staff engaged in operation & maintenance
5. Specific purchase policy, e.g for buying or rewinding electrical motors that consume almost half of the electrical energy
6. Need for monitoring or measurement, e.g. load, operating speed, vibration, temp., power quality problems (voltage, current leakage, line losses etc.)
7. Need for corrective actions / preventive actions
8. Records to be generated

Hope this helps.
