Does anyone know of a good 'agency' in the US that could find me professional work in the US. I am a UK citizen working in the automotive industry.

Yes! I know several good agencies, but I swear to you you can do a better job for yourself in getting leads than most agencies will do for you.

Here are some bald facts to keep in mind:
  1. Employment and recruiting agencies work on fees which are a percentage of the annual salary of the persons they place.
  2. Obviously, many recruiters and agents prefer to work on a few good candidates for high paying positions than on many candidates for low paying positions to avoid the drudgery of wading through hundreds of mediocre resumes to find a few pearls. The theory being the higher the position and salary, the more sophisticated and focused the job candidate - if not, recruiters rarely have time or motive to train a candidate and just move on to the next candidate.
  3. The lower the salary and status of the job opening, the less human involvement in the early stages of screening candidates.
  4. When agents talk about getting into the "unadvertised" job market, they merely mean they offer up candidates 100% of the time to prospective employers to keep the lines of communication open so they can have first crack when a job opens up. You can do the same with a judicious job campaign.
  5. There is no agent anywhere on earth who can get you a job you couldn't have gotten on your own if you had been focused in your search.
You definitely should read through these two threads:
Tips to get past the "gatekeeper" when job hunting
Resume and cover letter - How good are yours?

Then, ask us questions that may occur to you. You cannot just send out one resume to one recruiter and lay the entire job campaign in his hands unless you are the laziest person on earth. A job hunt is a job all by itself. It deserves time and personal involvement.

^^^absolutely correct. PM me and I'll see if there is something within my company that could work out for you. I also used to work for Johnson Controls and Rockwell Automation, so I could help you if they have positions there that are a good fit.

Although my connections are primarily in Wisconsin so hopefully you don't mind cold weather and a fanaticism about beer! :)
