OSHA vs. OHSAS 18001 vs. Work Environment - Clause 6.4

Yes, but ...

I like to think of this as an overlapping venn diagram. Sidney is right. Work environment is not OHSAS but OHSAS is part of work environment. Taking Marc's point about WE being a story telling process. Anything you do to protect the workforce and any improvements to their surroundings becomes part of the story.

for the most part, OH&S is OUTSIDE of the scope of ISO 9001.
True enough. I suppose it could be regarded as "common interests": ISO9004 clause 6.4 provides a list of things that should lead to enhanced performance. Most of those have a bearing on H&S, and generally speaking, a good work environment does have a positive effect on performance.

OHSAS and ISO 9001

Sidney is right. If you look at the direct requirements of ISO 9001 in items 6.3 and 6.4 they only ask for the environment to assure achievement of product requirements.

In ISO TS this has been extended by item 6.4.1 where safety is definitely an item to be considered. Then OHSAS or whatever ( like Z10 or ISRS .....) comes into the picture.

Best regards,

Antoine

Work Environment in ISO 9001

ALL THE REPLIES ARE TRUE IN A WAY ON AN OTHER.
Acc. to my opinion, ISO 9001, 14001, and Ohsas 18001 are to be combined in the near ( ???) future.
The weight of each standard application is different, but still 6.4 in ISO 9001 is "passing the ball" to 18001, leaving empty space for the auditor to promote an other product.
In any case, Quality is always connected with a "good" working enviroment and probably with the interest of both parties: Customer and Auditing organization.
Also ISO 9001:2000 Section 5.1 a)"communicating to the organization the importance of meeting customer as well as statutory and regulatory requirements" is there for the same, more or less, reason. :mg:
What do you think?

Claes, well noted. Unfortunately, for those people who erroneously think that ISO 9004 is an "interpretation" document for ISO 9001, that list contained in ISO 9004 6.4 leads to confusion when implementing ISO 9001 6.4.

Dear Sydney,

You are completly right about the purpose of ISO 9004:2000. But of course if you want to improve in the “work environment” field, you can use what this standard has written about it. Remember ISO 9004:2000 are “Guidelines for performance and improvements”, and what it states on 6.4 are somehow related with OSHAS 18001.

Saudações!

6.4: Work Environment

Additional factors that should be considered:
  • Work Location
  • Work methods
  • Hygiene
  • Ergonomics
  • Housekeeping
  • Vibration
  • Noise
  • Lighting
  • Ventilation
  • Climate control
  • Safety rules and protective equipments
  • Portective clothing
Most of these factors are considered when you evaluate the risk of the work environment as per any regulator standard used in the organization (example: OSH) no matter if you are an user of ISO 9001, 14001 or other standard
