Our calibration company informed me that ASTM E-18 has been revised. Now currently ASTM E-18 2005. The major change involves the use of the 1/16 steel ball being replaced by a carbide ball. Anyone heard of any other changes?

I have ASTM E18-05 here. That seems to be the major change. There are some revisions to section 10 Precision and Bias

Confirming - E18 has been revised - latest information from ASTM as of April 11, is that it has had an epsilon edit (footnote A of Table 19 was editorially corrected). It does specify the tungsten carbide ball, and also notes that tungsten carbide ball indenter has given results up to 1 Rockwell point lower than when a steel ball indenter is used.

?? Last I checked on this (which was a couple months ago) the change was to be issued RECOMMENDING carbide balls but not requiring them. I don't have the actual text of what was issued, but it was my understanding it would point out the virtues of carbide over steel without requiring them.
