Out of Calibration Microscope Used for Development Work

Just wanted to get some opinions.

What would you do if for two years measurements were made using an out of calibration XRF microscope? Recently calibration pucks were sent out and it was determined that the microscope used for development work was out of calibration. What happens to all the data collected? How is the correlation between the new data and old data captured? :frust:

It's hard to answer your question without some more details like,
  1. What are you using it for?
  2. How is the data stored?
  3. How far and in what way out of spec?
  4. How did it affect your product or design?
  5. Was subsequent product produced, verified with it or another device?
The more information you can comfortably provide, the better able to answer the question.

Let’s see if this helps

It is used to determine sulfur content of barrier treated nonmetallic materials. Sample discs are treated along with the components then the discs are measured with the microscope. The data is manually recorded and analyzed. Developmental parts were made and tested correlating additional performance test results to the original data.

The data was used to create the specification. For example (these are made up values), a spec of 1.0 to 1.5 g/m2 was created. This spec is put on the drawing. Calibration discs were created and sent out to an accredited laboratory. These discs were measured at 1, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8 by the original microscope. The laboratory measured 1.3, 1.4, 1.8, 2.3. It was off by about 102%, reading more than the original. It does not affect the product but the design specification was based on the old measurements, which is correlated to various performance tests. Unfortunately the measurement technique is not common so another device was not used for verification. :bonk:

So, what you are saying is, you backed into your spec based on what worked and used an uncalibrated piece of equipment to set the standard.

Seems like the actual spec, based on the lab measurement, should be 1.3/1.8. Validate the product based on the real numbers.

Is it possible to obtain a CRM (Certified Reference Material) or better, a NRCM (NIST Certified Reference Material)?
