Out of Tolerance for Weights

Hey Everyone!

I recently had an OOT Finding for my Class 1, ASTM 20 gram weights. The vendor claimed they were reading too heavy. Do you know what would cause this? Through my past experience, it is common for weights to be lighter and I have typically not seen them get heavier. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would check for contamination on the masses, then check their magnetic state...

It may also be worth verifying the vendor's reference mass or scale calibration, but they could get prickly about that :(

"claimed they were reading too heavy" - what method did they use to back their claim? Did they use calibrated scales? Comparison with other 20gram weights? How do you yourself verify the weight? What is your stated tolerance requirement for 20g?

It could just have been a dirty wirght.
I know that there have been labs where I worked where we did not clean the weight prior to calibration - we wanted to present the data on the weight that the customer would have been seeing.
