Package Storage Direction in an I.T. Warehouse

Hello

I work for an IT company and during one of our surveillance visits the external auditor raised a minor non conformity because some packages in the warehouse did not have the proper storage direction. ( the "arrow" on the package was not pointing up)

just for clarification the arrows we are talking about are the "double arrows" that can be found in this link : http://www.buzzle.com/articles/what-do-packaging-symbols-mean.html

Anyway ... Following that visit we double checked the packages in our warehouse and noticed that some packages were labelled with the arrows but contained items that were not really "sensitive" to storage direction ( as per our technical manager opinion) : they contained RAM, cables, hard disks ...etc

We then tried to come up with a work instruction clarifying to the stock keeper for which packages the storage direction matters and for which doesnt matter ... but we are having a bit of a hard time :(

As per our technical manager :

* STORAGE direction is crucial for packages containing servers and/or tape libraries

* Storage direction is somewhat less important and is not a requirement for other kind of IT packages ( essentailluy packages containing hard disks , memory ,cables , cabinets ...etc )

My question is this :

- To what point is that list accurate ??

- Can anyone that works in an IT company and has experience about packages storage direction give advices ?

- is there some kind of documents/articles that give clear guidlines about what items need to be stored according to arrows , and for what kind of equipment storage direction doesnt matter ?

Please help

Thanks

I've been on both sites of this equation, as an Auditor (9001, 27001) and as a Manager (both Quality and Information Systems).

Frankly, I think you are overcomplicating it. Just make sure the arrows point up - you don't need a work instruction.

If they can't consistently keep the arrows pointing up, how can we expect them to a) check the contents, b) evaluate the importance c) execute the decision?

I'd start with a response related to training and go from there.

Also - for completeness, you might consider evaluating what damage has potentially been done in the past as a result of this mishandling (record the results).

Best of luck!

Excellent points. As you've said, determining which packages get stickers is pointless if the stock keeper cannot keep existing labeled packages oriented correctly. The staff shouldn't even need to know what's inside that box - that's the whole point of having instructional labelling. If it's directionally sensitive, fragile, heavy, whatever - the packaging should be labelled accordingly.

First step is to get the arrows pointing the right way, irrespective of what's in the package. The next step is to define what products require the arrows and which don't. If it's not clear-cut, put a sticker on it.
