Definition Parallel Process - I found two Definitions - Which is correct?

I found a definition for a Parallel Process, but it is much different than what I found in another place.

1. Parallel Process – another process that can be executed at the same time as the primary process. A vaild question was asked by a reviewer that is, By the same or a different trigger? or both?

I don't have the answer would you help?

Below is a definition that I found on the web.

2. A process in which two or more sequences of activities are going on simultaneously. If a physical document is being passed from one person to another, the process is necessarily a single sequence. An electronic document in a workflow system, on the other hand, can be sent to several people, simultaneously.

Now which one is correct for ISO processes?

Thanks in advance!

Set of Interrelated or interacting activities that transforms inputs into out puts

MarkJoel,

I do not believe that ISO really cares, at least I do not know of any such definition or guidance on parallel processes. But I did want to bring up the fact that even a paper document may have parallel processes when it is reviewed and approved by a committee or group of representatives from those functions that have responsibilities for implementing what the document is stating.

As usual, Doug Purdy has pointed out the obvious:

there is no occurrence of the word "parallel" anywhere in ISO9001-2000.

What Standard is under discussion? In the absence of a Standard or Customer requirement, the organization is free to create its own definitions of processes and activities in its purview. As you cite, there are alternate descriptions of "parallel processes." I, myself, can "devise" still more definitions. The ultimate point is:
The organization describes what it ACTUALLY does. It does NOT try to shoehorn its operation into someone else's definition.

1 What do you reckon is meant by "Primary process"? I don't know - but you will need to know before the definition which uses the term can make sense!

Do you realise that the term "trigger" isn't used in ISO9000 or ISO9001 (although if it was then the idea of a process would make more sense to a lot of folk)? In a business, more or less all processes happen in parallel - sales happen while manufacturing goes on, procurement, training and management review can coincide ... but so what?

2 this definition doesn't make sense to me. Even within a process, activities can happen together or in a "random" sequence (the only requirement being that, say, tasks 4,5 and 6 must be complete before 7 is started. Again ... so what?

Thanks for your advise!
It is now clear to me.

Exactly. We are tending to move from a flow chart that says this must happen, then that, then that, to mind maps that show the things that must happen but to not force an order on them. The main thing is to define what the required output(s) are, and work out what inputs are required to get those outputs.

James,

Would you share an example of a mindmap for a process? I have used a mindmap for training & competency, which I have shared here at the cove, but I would like to see a mindmap that shows interactions and decisions of a process.

Thanks,
Doug
