Part family concept in Process FMEA - Thank You Guys!

Hello Folks,
I would like to join You guys by saying Thank you! Because You have been providing some good insight on FMEA which I found interesting!
I will try to catch you in the future- but for now I need help on the following questions.

Q. Most of you agreed on the use of Part family concept in Process FMEA.
But what are the similarity criteria to form parts(machined components)) into part family that can at least satisfy customer requirements on the FMEA report.

APPLAUSE!

Welcome to the Cove, and I'm glad you've derived some benefit from it.

There are no hard-and-fast criteria; in general when you group products into families for the FMEA and control plan it's expected that the processes are similar enough to obviate the need for separate documentation. I know that sounds obvious, but you need to review each product and process and make a rational decision about what's needed. You need to be able to explain your rationale in doing a family rather than individual PFMEAs and control plans, which means you need to think about the risks involved in grouping.

Hey Jim,
TX!
I completely agree with that point! To be specific, the use of part family formation has long been in manufacturing areas for purposes like design and process retrieval, part throughput time reduction, etc. I am well aware of these concepts and been using it in research and application. Criteria(design as well as manufacturing) are crucial for success of such approach. Recently, I am going to apply part family approach to AUTO industry to develop PFMEA as a research project(potentially rewarding)!
Q. Do you(Jim) share any of your experience in this direction?(I am afraid of practicality of the idea)!
Q. DO any of you(including Jim) can give approximate similarity threshold (either design or process among parts)?and how to reach to that point?

Feel free to fire me back-I am gathering things and refine my thought.
CHEERS!
